Francis Edward Wright born Spilsby 1906
« on: Wednesday 13 September 17 19:56 BST (UK) »
I hope someone can help. My paternal grandfather, Francis Edward Wright, was born in Spilsby in June 1906. I have his birth certificate but it only has his mother's name - Ada Ellen Wright. The father is not recorded.

How can I find out more about my grandfather and his heritage please? Parish records (he was christened at Toynton St Peter in July 1906) show only his mother, as far as I can determine.

He had a sister, Eveline, who was born in New Leake in 1913.

I would be really grateful for any help.

Thank you

Julie

Have you looked for him on the 1911 census?

Have you looked for Ada Ellen Wright on the 1901/1911 censuses?

If no fathers name is recorded on his birth cert then it's clear he was illegitimate and unless he made contact with his biological father before he married it's unlikely his marriage cert will record a fathers name.

Eveline was also illegitimate - mothers maiden name Wright

Just a possibility - but she may not have been born in Lincs

Is there an address on the birth cert as you can use the 1911 to find who was living there - although it was 5yrs later so may be of no help

Hi Carole

Thanks for responding and for your help so far.

I have my grandfathers birth cert, definitely no father and the residence of the monther is simply 'Toynton St Peter'. His marriage cert to my grandmother states his father as having the same names as him and the occupation is 'farm labourer'.

I have located my great grandmother on the 1911 census, living in Toynton St Peter with her mother and my four year old grandfather. Her occupation is given as Charwoman.

On the 1901 census, she is in service, at age 15, to Samuel Firth, a woollen and worsted cloth manufacturer at Cellars Clough House in Marsden, Yorkshire. There were no other adult males in the household, the eldest son being 8 years old at the time of the census, making him unlikely to have been a father to my grandfather five years later.

It seems this might be an impossible task!

Also, the names of my grandfather are family names; Edward is Ada Ellen's father, and Francis is the name of her eldest brother

It looks like I have the right 1891 entry but as far as identifying his biological father - I think you will have to give up on that one
