What is my next move?
« on: Wednesday 13 September 17 20:35 BST (UK) »
Hi,if I have the petition number, volume number and date of petition for a naturalisation request in the 1940s in the state of Ohio, is there anywhere on-line  I can see the actual documents to see where the applicants lived and who sponsored them etc.

Thanks.
Paul.

There are some links here - http://www.germanroots.com/ohio-naturalization-records.html  Whether or not it is available online would depend on the court and location.

Does the index say what court they used?  In that time frame, I think it would have to be the federal court, but it may specify where.

At any rate, I doubt they are available online.

Shellyesq, the index states the records are from U S District Court, southern district of Ohio, Cincinnati.I'm sorry, I don't know if the District Court is different from the Federal Court or is the Federal Court. It seems these records are not going to be easy to find on-line! Thanks for your help anyway.
Regards.
Paul.

Yes, US District Court is the federal court.  Looks like the records would be held in the Chicago branch of the National Archives.  https://www.archives.gov/chicago/finding-aids/naturalization-records.html

Hi Paul: I'm assuming that you found your information in FamilySearch.org's "Ohio, Southern District Naturalization Index, 1852-1991."

The website of the Ohio Southern District U.S. District Court has a link to records sent to the Chicago branch of the National Archives: http://www.ohsd.uscourts.gov/NARA

But the direct link to Ohio Southern District records at the Chicago Branch is https://www.archives.gov/chicago/finding-aids/courts/us-courts-cincinnati.html

Halfway down is information on how to e-mail the branch to get records for cases that have been closed for more than 20 years (your situation).

You might also try the website of Hamilton County, Ohio (http://www.hamiltoncountyohio.gov/i_want_to) if the person(s) you are researching live(d) in or near Cincinnati. The link shows various types of records.

Hi johnnyboy, thanks for the help and the links. I will try them all. May I be so bold as to ask why you included 3 shocked symbols beside your name?

Paul.
