Can anyone help me date this photo of the Bowles family please?
« on: Thursday 14 September 17 13:29 BST (UK) »
Hi
could anyone help me date this photo please?  Likely to have been taken in rural Wales so they may not be wearing the latest fashions. There is a choice of two ladies for the central figure, both having four daughters.
many thanks

Avril

A non-expert estimate: I think they display a mix of styles from the 1890s with the picture taken late 1890s.
And here's a sepia version for you.
Cheers, Peter.
Convicts: COSIER (1791); LEADBEATER (1791); SINGLETON (& PARKINSON) (1792); STROUD (1793); BARNES (aka SYDNEY) (1800); DAVIS (1804); CLARK (1806); TYLER (1810); COWEN (1818); ADAMS[ON] (1821); SMITH (1827); WHYBURN (1827); HARBORNE (1828).
Commoners: DOUGAN (1844); FORD (1849); JOHNSTON (1850); BEATTIE (& LONG) (1856); BRICKLEY (1883).
Outlaws: MCGREGOR (1883) & ass. clans, Glasgow, Glenquaich, Glenalmond and Glengyle.

Those huge sleeves, narrowing on the lower arm, are 1890s style I believe, so I agree with Peter.

Interesting that the mother's sleeves are not so 'leg o mutton' as the girls's ones but I'd say mid to late 1890s.

I see that Wiggy's crept in while I've been typing and having a longer look!

Agree with the others. Peter mentions a mix of styles which would be typical for very late 1890's & maybe into the very early 1900's. So 1898-02 but my money would be on 1898-99.
The oldest looks 16/17 & the youngest 12.
They are all wearing very nice outfits so I would suggest a family with disposable income.

Hi

which daughter is the eldest?  Back left is taller but her hair is worn down. Back right is slighter and her hair is worn up. She may also have a key chain around her neck suggesting she may be married.

When did girls start wearing their hair up?  Anyone know?
regards

Avril

I think the eldest is at right back.
