George Hill born circa 1837-38 in Herne Bay
« on: Thursday 14 September 17 13:57 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research a Hill family and am stuck on George Hill who was born around 1837-38 in Herne Bay, Kent.  He appears on the 1861 census aged 23, a carpenter living in Northfleet together with his parents William (47, born in Plymouth) & Sarah (38, born Herne, Kent) Hill and a younger sister Sarah (14, born Herne Bay, Kent).  I think they are also on the 1851 census but William Hill's age and place of birth are not compatible - it shows Wm Hill, aged 30 (place of birth 'not stated' but ditto mark suggests St. Pancras, Middx.), Sarah Hill, aged 27 born Camberly, Kent (could mean Canterbury) plus George Hill, aged 14 plus a brother Alfred, aged 10 both born in Herne, Kent.  Can anybody find a birth/baptism for George Hill and also the marriage of his parents William & Sarah?

Nothing stands out on GRO Index for Birth Reg for George/Alfred/Sarah.

This is the only Sarah I can find 1851 Census who is not living with her Parents;
 Luke Heasman, 63
Sarah Heasman, 55
Luke Heasman, 35
Charles Heasman, 17
Thomas Heasman, 15
Ann Heasman, 13
Sarah Hill, 5, Visitor, born Crayford

Although this one may be the Daug of William/Sophia Bapt Crayford 1845.
But Father is a Labourer.

As we havent found the 1841 Census Sarah may be a second Wife for William (given her age I wouldnt be surrprised)

FreeBMD has 3 marriages in Kent for a William Hill 1842/1844/1849 with a Sarah on the same page.

Interestingly there are 2 Death Regs for a Sophia Hill 1844/1847
1847 one is age 5 and the 1844 one age 27**

Got to go out so will see if I can look at this more later or someone else may come up with something for you.

A possible scenario.

Neither George Hill nor his sister Sarah were born/baptised as Hills.

Sarah Howard (Widow) married William Hill, Bachelor and a Carpenter on 4 September 1864 at Bermondsey, London (or as it was then, Surrey)  Her father was James Port, Deceased.

Joseph and Sarah Howard had a daughter Sarah baptised at Herne Bay on 9 December 1846.  Joseph was a Butcher, of King Street, Herne Bay.  The baptism was private and Sarah was received into the Church on 7 January 1847.

It then gets even more complicated as Joseph Howard (Widower) married Sarah Port on 31 August 1845 at Sturry.  So, now to try and find George and his possible parentage.  ???

Probably muddying the waters even more but..

There is a George Port baptism in Herne 03 Feb 1839 - but, parents are William & Jane Port.

or

George POART bpt. Woodnesborough 24 Mar 1839 - parents Charles & Sarah.

Thanks to all of you - it's getting quite interesting.  Tony, are you saying that William Hill married Sarah Howard, nee Port in 1864, who had previously been married to Joseph Howard and they had a daughter Sarah Howard baptised  in 1846 and Sarah subsequently was 'adopted' as Sarah Hill?  Any idea when Sarah Port married Joseph Howard and was George Hill also their child?
Do you think that the William & Sarah Hill shown on the 1851 census are the same couple as on the 1861 census?  If so, where does Alfred Hill fit in?  Now I've really muddied the waters!

Sorry.

My typing skills and ability to check are non-existent, at present.

My last paragraph should have read Joseph Howard (not Port) Widower married Sarah Port.....

Not sure on the technicality of adoption of Sarah Howard!

Still no sign of either George or Alfred!

Not sure how to put this but, it appears that Bigamy (Divorce unlikely) may play a role in the various family relationships.  When Sarah Howard married she states herself to be a Widow.  However, Joseph Howard appears to be alive and marries (for the third time) to a Rebecca Coker (Widow) in 1855 at Holborn!

Yikes, good luck!

Sorry not a great deal of help,
Tony

I think that Tony's scenario which suggests William Hill eventually married Sarah Howard (widow) is probably correct as on the 1871 census I found George Hill, then aged 32 & born in Herne Bay living with his wife Elizabeth (he had married Elizabeth Horton in 1861 in Bermondsey) and their 2 children Charles (5) & Arthur (2) plus Sarah Howard (aged 24), whose relationship was described as 'sister-in-law' - I think this could be 'step-sister'. So, I'm still not sure about George's mother
