HELEN GEEKIE nee Mill, why can't I find you on the 1861 census?
« on: Thursday 14 September 17 17:26 BST (UK) »
Hi guys
Hit the brick wall big time!
Can find no trace of HELEN GEEKIE on the 1861 census in Dundee. ???
She died at Perth Road Dundee in 1867 'widow of John Geekie, ploughman and daughter of William Mill joiner, and Janet Millar who were married at Longforgan in 1781.
The last census record I could find for John Geekie and and Helen Mill was 1841 at Step Row Dundee. John died about 1845.
Can find no entry in 1851 for Helen or her son John Geekie born 1827 but know they must be in Dundee as John married Ann Storrier in 1856 and his address then is Perth Road Dundee
Where have they been hiding?
Any help would be most appreciated
Jen

1861 think she is living with daughter Mary and husband John Baxter - her surname has been transcribed as Gekkie in one transcription and Jekkie in another.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Was son John married maybe before?

There is this entry in 1851:

John Geekie 26 carter b. Moneyfield, Forfarshire
Marey Geekie 20
Elizabeth Geekie 3

Address: 2 St Davids Lane, Dundee

just checked the marriage cert for occupation and John was a shipwright and bachelor on his marriage cert in 1856. However, wife in 1871 census is Margaret Clark and in 1881 wife is Helen possibly previously Young as that's the surname of a daughter.

Ah well...that takes out that John, carter from 1851! As a shipwright, he may have been at sea at the time of the census in 1851 perhaps.

Thanks for all that super info.....checked SP for Mary Geekie and John Baxter and they were married in Dundee in 1847 and she was indeed the daughter of Helen.
Helen's birthplace on the census shows she was born in Perthshire but the district is hard to read.
Also checked for the marriage of son John Geekie to Helen Young and they were married in Dundee in 1875 she was the widow of David Young, her maiden name Christie.
It shows John as the widower of Margaret Clark and Ann Storrier.
The 1851 entry for Helen, Alex and Mary seems to fit in with the address in Perth Road, but the counties of birth for each is a bit puzzling.  Helen was Perthshire born, and Alex in Ceres Fife seems a bit odd. Also Mary....seems from her age given on various census returns and her death certificate she was born in  c1825 in Abernyte but I can't find her birth on OPR, though there was a birth for a Mary Geekie in 1814 at Cargill to John Geekie and Helen Mill.  I would think that this Mary died in childhood.
Well that's a puzzle for another day, but a big thank you once again for setting me on the right tracks and finding out that John married 3 times was a bonus
Kind Regards
Jen
