If Stephen snr dies in 1890 and Emily Elizabeth was born in 1892, who is her father?  Perhaps they are on the census in this other man's name

I ordered Emily's birth certificate and unfortunately there is no father on it, so I'm lost at where else to look.

Do you have Stephen's death certificate in 1890? If so, does the address tally with any of the later address' of the family?

Also, it looks like Stephen and Elizabeth may have had another child, William Louis, who died later in 1890. I don't suppose you have his death certificate do you?

GRO BMD references:
1890 Q3 Death - Stephen Browning; age 38 (b1852); West Ham; 04a; 110

1889 Q2 Birth - William Louis Browning (mmn: Faulkner); West Ham; 04a; 128
1890 Q4 Death - William Lewis Browning; age 20m* (b1889); West Ham; 04a; 110

* Probably months; GRO index has age 20, FreeBMD has age 1

Also, in case you don't have it...

Marriage:
All Saints, West Ham
18 Jul 1897

Alfred Richard Browning; 19; bach; green grocer; 14 Pelly Rd; f: Stephen Browning (dec); carpenter
Carrie Palmer; 22; spin; 109 Vicarage Lane; f: George Palmer (dec); boiler maker

wit: E Fuller[?], E Bradford[?]; banns

I couldn't see any of the Browning's at Pelly Road in 1891.

I had a look through the baptisms at West Ham and couldn't see any for the Browning's in the late 1880s or early 1890s.

Stephen Browning died in Leyton Union work House, but they lived in 4 nut tree grove Plaistow.
I haven't got round to ordering Williams birth or death yet but gonna guess it would also say nut tree grove.

My only guess is that  this family was missed from the 1891 or she is under another name, I would have thought that a certificate might reveal a suitable address

I did some searches in West Ham just using forenames and still couldn't any of them in 1891; they all seem to go walkabout.

The Nut Tree Grove address is a bit curious. I couldn't locate it on any map but following the enumerator's path in 1881 you get an idea of where it is and it puts the family in a similar location to later census'. The street seems to have disappeared by 1891, as I couldn't find it in any census record. Maps seem to show a lot of development around Plaistow around this time. However, I did find a 1892 newspaper reference to someone (unrelated) living at Nut Tree Grove.

Could it be possible the street still existed in 1891 and the family were still living there but for some reason the whole street was missed by enumerators? It seems unlikely.
