I am looking for a possible relationship between Adolphus Oxley born abt 1864 Barbadoes and James Oxley. Adolphus married Rosa Ann Hartwell 1903. They had a son Adolphus Arnold abt 1904. I would also like to know when Adolphus came into nz. He died in tragic cicumstances but I know all about this and where he is buried. I cant seem to find James death. He  had a son Rufus Gilbert Oxley No I havnt a marriage cert for adolphus as am doing this for someone else. thanks lnr

There are a couple of references to a James Oxley on Papers Past but no proof of a connection.

1946*/101718   Oxley   Rufus Gilbert   Maraea   James

1941/30664   Oxley   Maraea Nika   60Y

1966/27776   Oxley   Rufus Gilbert   59Y

*Late registration, born 1907.

Where did Maraea die? Where was she buried?

Did you notice that in this newspaper article the witness James Grant is described as being of the same nationality as Adolphus Oxley..
COUNTRYMAN OF OXLEY.
Northern Advocate, 11 October 1915

I can only see one James Oxley in NZ and that is James Stafford Oxley

RA Hartwell is my grandmother (now deceased). She never ever spoke about her marriage to Adolphus Oxley nor about the one child they had--AAA Oxley. For reasons you will know since his (and his father's) tragic end was widely reported at the time. Adolphus took the son when they separated. A newspaper report of their divorce has some details of his whereabouts and a woman's name I don't see mentioned above.  See attached screenshot. Perhaps James was born of that liaison.

Anyway, family lore always had it that Nana met and married an "Indian doctor" when she worked as a maid in a boarding house in New Plymouth, NZ, and that he had arrived there by ship not long before they married. Somehow that turned into the belief that he was a ship's cook, so maybe your search could be narrowed down to crews of vessels that arrived in New Plymouth in 1902/1903. And, obviously, he was West Indian, not Indian.
