Joseph Smiles
« on: Friday 15 September 17 13:27 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking up the smiles family for a friend and I've got to Joseph smiles born c 1752 in the Royal Navy and living in Liverpool
I've got his marriage by licence there in 1772 and his pension 1796 and 1797 but no baptism  or burial.
He has 4 children James ,Joseph ,John and Thomas (died as a baby)who move to London in the 180(0)s.
Can any one help track him down?

ps he's living in Pitt street.

One of the reasons a burial record may not be coming up if he died in Liverpool and if you've tried Ancestry's burial records, ordinary Family Search searches, Lancs OPC etc is he could be buried at St James Cemetery by what is now Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. For this cemetery you have to do a bit of hard labour there's no search engine for it. If you want to have a go and look page by page here is the link:-

Records start in 1829 mid roll here:-

Looking at his disappearance from the Liverpool directories he may have died in the 1790s.

St James Cemetery will probably be no use to you now as it opened in 1829. Isn't Sarah Smiles Joseph's wife? If in 1800 the pub is in her name then it's likely Joseph has died.

Hi
Yes Sarah is the wife .She is buried in London  so no clue there as to where Joseph would have been buried.
It does look as though he died about 1796/7.

I don't suppose you would have any ideas of the names of Pubs in Pitt St?

I haven't seen any names it doesn't seem to stay a pub. Victualler premises can be anywhere that has drink and food. It might not have had a name. Other directories:-

Bailey 1787

Wosencroft 1790
