Cannot access my computer records.... HELP
« on: Friday 15 September 17 16:53 BST (UK) »
I had been using FTM 2008 for many years and 3 years ago I had it updated to FTM 2014. Then laptop through a wobbler and I lost FTM but, I had saved the data to my memory stick.

When I insert my memory stick, the laptop will not read my family tree data. In desperation I reloaded my FTM 2008 but still no joy. (FTM 2008 was only compatable to Windows XP and Vista) whereas my laptop is running Windows 8.1

Has anyone got any ideas how I can resolve this? Thanks peewee

Peewee, firstly, calm down.  Secondly what exactly does happen when you try to read the data on the stick?  Can you see files listed using Windows Explorer?  (Are you using Windows?  Which version?).  What error messages do you see?  Check that there is no dust in the stick or in the slot you use.

If not, try the stick on another computer.  If you can then see data files listed, copy the files to that computer, and from there onto another stick.  Don't do ANYTHING which involves writing to the original data stick.  If it has a write-protection notch, activate it. (It might have a small sliding switch to let your computer know not to write to it.)

I hope you have at least one backup, with another being looked after by someone else, in case of flood or fire?  And that your backup data has been tested.  I'm not being hard or facetious, just giving you the benefit of my experience.

Backed up data is no good if you aren't sure that it can be used.  Ideally data should be backed up onto a series of three or more sources, so that you can always fall back to an earlier version.

Now that you are calm, provide me and others more details.  What has happened since the data was OK?  Do you have data on the PC's hard disk?  More later when I've seen your answers.

the data on the flash drive is fine but the operating system i originally had was for family tree maker 2008 was for windows vista. I loaded it on my new computer but the new computer runs windows 8.1 and the two systems aren't compatible.
I wanted to find out if there was anything i could do to retrieve the data on the stick. It appears that i need family tree maker 2014 which i was using before my computer lost the program.
Thank you for replying

Hi Peewee,

If it was me, I'd contact support.mackiev.com directly, explaining your problem and and asking for advice. The upgrade from FTM 2014 to FTM 2017 (including data) is stable. If you still have the FTM 2014 data then 'ímporting'' this into FTM 2017 shouldn't be a problem. If the only data you have is from FTM 2008, then you'll need advice from Mackiev on how to upgrade your data. Maybe they'll do it for you if you ask nicely ;)

Peewee, could you confirm that it is FTM that won't read your stick, rather than your laptop?

Hi

Is the stick capable of being read by your old computer?

Good Day Gentlemen

Problem solved. Mackieve wanted me to buy a discounted version of FTM 2017. I simply purchased a £10 copy of FTM 2014 off of the internet and I can now access the memory stick.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Peewee
