Christiana Young ( nee Bentley) bapt. 14th Jan. 1757,Kirkdale, North Yorkshire. I have information on her parents and siblings but nothing further on her after Bentley was born at Stockton on Tees . All Bentley's later records are in Sunderland so I do not think that the family moved to Stockton.

I think he would have been living in Sunderland or Gateshead.

Both Bentley and Sarah married at St John the Baptist,  Newcastle upon Tyne.
Have you looked into the possibility of James and Christiana living in Newcastle?

Another one for the 'maybe' box, although the age doesn't quite match

Durham County Advertiser, 11 November 1820

'At Newcastle....... Monday last, Mr James Young of the Groat Market, brewer, aged 70'

This can't be coincidence?

Burial St John the Baptist, Newcastle upon Tyne, 23rd April 1822,
Christian Young, aged 67, residence Groat Market.

I noticed the James Christian Young death at the Groat Market but didn't read any further because it was Newcastle  :-\

James Young jnr. died. Burial aged 2 years, 29 Nov. 1787, St. Michael & All Angels, Sunderland. Entry in register: James. son of James Young of Panns, Brewer aged 2 years. So assume the James as witness is the father.
Bentley's first 4 children were chr. at Gateshead and the next two at Bishopwearmouth. All the census put Bentley and family in Sunderland.
Of Sarah's 3 children the 2nd two were chr.  at Gateshead.
I put the two marriages  in Newcastle down to the spouses of these two and the above  baptisms and the census showing where Bentley lived were the reasons I suggested Gateshead or Sunderland.   Sarah and their 3 daughters had joined  transported husband and father  Lancelot  Iredale in Australia before the 1841 census so I don't know where she and the children lived for the 12 years before they set sail. and I don't know what happened to the other siblings Nanny and Betsy. the first child William died at birth.

I am making  note of ALL the maybes. The Groat Market is very exciting especially the 'brewer'  in the Durham county Advertiser piece. Where to next? - I guess I should confirm that Christian is a female.  In all records ( i.e. marriage and births ) so far there have been no mis-spellings for Christiana  but I guess it would be very easy for an 'a' to fall off the end.

Thank you everyone for coming so quickly to my aid. Jo

The Bishop's Transcripts didn't help with the gender of Christian - no further info than what you have given me.

Another thing in favour of the Groat Market area:   a transcript of Sarah Young and Lancelot Iredale's marriage - ...Lancelot Iredale bachelor and Sarah Young, spinster both of this parish .........
Lancelot was either from St. Mary Gateshead ( family baptisms & burials ) or from St. Nicholas, Newcastle ( Lancelot was born at The Close, Newcastle but chr. at St. Mary's Gateshead, and his younger siblings were born at Gateshead) so I guess he could have moved temporarily to St. Johns parish. It is looking  as though Sarah would have been of the parish if her parents, James and Christiana  were living at Groat Market

I feel I need some more confirmation but I'm not sure what it could be!  Jo

Hi Jo

JenB gave Sarah's marriage as St John earlier:

Bentley's marriage http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kqd/

Residence in a parish was only required for 3 weeks before marriage.

Christian is used as a female name in Scottish records:
Added ~ http://www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Christian.html

I'm sure that the Groat Market entries are for your family.

Well done, Jennifer  :)

Jo, I'm unclear what relevance the birthplaces of Bentley and Sarah's children might have to the place of residence of Christiana and James?

I have seen the names Christiana and Christian used interchangeably.

Like Gadget I'm pretty certain this is the right couple. I suppose the absolute clincher might be a notice in the newspaper along the lines of '...Christiana widow of the late James Young, brewer.....' but as yet I haven't come up with anything.
