Ann Hodgkinson
« on: Saturday 16 September 17 10:24 BST (UK) »
I am looking for Ann Hodgkinson who married Joseph Milns (1760-1809)  in Mansfield on 30 November 1788.  Joseph Milns parents were James Milns and Mary Roebuck.

I do not know Ann's parentage.  I have some conflicting information with regard to Ann who was probably born on or about 1763.  She may have been born in Pinxton, Derbyshire which of course is on the boundary with Nottinghamshire.  On the other hand she might have been baptised on 9 Feb. 1763 in Teversal, Notts which is not far from Pinxton.

I would appreciate any information regarding Ann Hodgkinson in terms of birth place and parents.   I have plenty of information on her husband Joseph Milns.

Thanks, marp

Hi Marp

This could eliminate the one bapt in Teversal in 1763

Ann Hodgkinson married James Leverton 10.12. 1781 at Teversal St Katherines

Ann Leverton buried 1.2. 1837 aged 74 at Teversal.

That puts her birth around 1763.

Don't know if you are aware that the marriage between Joseph Milns and Ann Hodgkinson was by
licence.  Have you checked the licence for any additional information ?

Thank you very much indeed for the marriage details.   I knew the date and location of the marriage of Ann Hodgkinson and Joseph Milns but no more.   I was very interested to see that they needed a bondsman (and then had to research why and when a bondsman was required!).  I was also interested to see that Joseph was a butcher at the time of marriage as probate details list him as a yeoman.

Thank you Sunflower also for the details of a marriage of Ann Hodgkinson in Teversal, Notts.  I think it eliminates her.

I have spent some time in the last few days investigating Langton Hall, Kirkby in Ashfield.   The reason for this is that Stephen Glover the historian in writing about the pedigree of the  Milns/Milnes family wrote of 'Anne daughter of _________Hodgkinson of Langton Hall'  who married Joseph Milns in 1788. This has always been a puzzle to me as my understanding is that Langton Hall was the property of the Coke family (or one of their many branches).  My own theory is perhaps Ann and /or her parents were either servants at the Hall or worked on the estate or at least on one of the Coke estates.  In none of my investigations has a Hodgkinson turned up in connection with Langton Hall during the period of 1763-1788 before Anne's marriage.

I have checked Langton Hall with the address of Kirkby Lane, Pinxton (which is how it appears now) and the older version Langton Hall, Kirkby in Ashfield.

Thank you again for your assistance.  I will keep looking!
