Although adoption was not formalised at the time Ethel May Colcombe was adopted by the Sheehan couple who she was with in 1901 who did not have any children of their own.

If AVM is right about Jane Phillips marrying Alfred Colcombe possible

1901 census Green Dragon Hotel Herefordshire
Jane Colcombe 27 wid still room maid domestic serv born Wellington Herefordshire

In 1902 Jane marries James Charles Wilcox moves to Wales and has a further two children violet and Percy Wilcox who would be half siblings to Martha.

Dear Jennifer C, can't thank you enough..... we just wonder why Jane gave Ethel away and didn't get her back when she remarried.......we feel the family know something but they're not helping us! We're not judging at all......just curious......

Perhaps the second husband didn't want her, or she was settled with the family who adopted her.
