4 GALLON, MITCHELL'S WINE & SPIRIT SALT GLAZED JUG
« on: Sunday 17 September 17 19:19 BST (UK) »
I purchased this jug years ago. It is marked W Mitchell Wine & Spirit Merchant Lancaster. It has a number 4 on the lip & a number 627 next to the name.
I am hoping to find some information on this jug. Thank you

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

William Mitchell died 30 July 1919, he left an estate of £218,099 18s 5d.

He was originally a coachman at Ashton Hall before becoming a brewer.

Other than seeing this jar for sale on the internet, no other details appear to be forthcoming.

Mitchells are still going strong  and are still a family-run concern (I knew one of the family at one point). It was started in 1871 by William Mitchell at the Black Horse Inn in Lancaster. You could contact them at:

Mitchells of Lancaster
11 Moor Lane,
Lancaster LA1 1QB

Your 4 gallon stoneware jug looks as if it would be pretty heavy to move when full.  I have a similar style one but only for 1 gallon, which we dug up in our Buckinghamshire garden still intact, but sadly empty, but still rather heavy.  Also have a pint or so jug-shaped one from The Victory pub in Putney. An aunt of my husband told us that she used to be sent by her grandmother to get it filled at the pub, so that Granny could drink her beer at home!
