Riddel - Toronto, ONT

I am searching for the descendants (and ancestors) of Archibald Alexander Riddel.  My notes indicate that he was born on 10 Dec 1819 in or around Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to John Riddel (b. about 1780, d. about 1859) and Margaret Cochrane (b. 1786, d. 1859).  In 1836 he immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his parents (I do not know where any of his siblings went).  Both of his parents died in Toronto, ON, Canada.  On 12 Dec 1842 he married Ann Devlin (b. about 1819 in Ireland) in Toronto, ON, Canada.  They had 7 children: Charles-James (b. 1843, d. 1871), Margaret (b. 1845, d. 1845), John Cochrane (b. 1846, d. 1847), Mary-Ann (b. 1848, d. 1920), Margaret Emily (b. 1850, d. 1935), Sarah Jane (b. 1853, d. 1924), and Isabel (b. 1856, d. 1935).

Sarah Jane Riddel married Henry McLaren (1852-1938) in 1876 in Toronto, ON, Canada and had 3 sons: Archibald James (1877-1937), Harry Ashforth (1888-1890), and Samuel Henry (1893-1958).  I am descendant from this line.

Isabel Riddel married Joseph Davids in 1879 in Toronto, ON, Canada and had 3 children: Hilda Isabel (b. 1880), Rupert (b. 1882) and Blanch(e) Beatrice (b. 1884).  Blanch(e) married George Collison McKinley in 1916 in Toronto, ON, Canada.  I do not have any more information on Isabel and Joseph’s line.

I have no other information on any of A.A. Riddel’s other children.

John Riddel and Margaret Cochrane other children are: John (b. 1817 Peterhead, Scotland, d. 1876 Aukland NZ), Isabella (b. 1821 England), James (b. 1823 England), Catherine (b. 1826 England), Thomas (b. 1828), and Alexander (b. 1830 England).  I do not know anything about any of the other children.

For some reason, every now and then Rupert's next of kin is listed as Mabel, or Mrs J Davids, but more often than not, Isabel.  The address never wavers though, so just some weird error.

Starting on page 81 of the file, you can see widowed mother Isabel applying for a separation allowance, as she still had unmarried Hilda at home. She also mentions the other daughter (Mrs Geo C Mckinley), with all the names and addresses.

In the 1940 voter's list, on Cheriton Ave, there is a spinster Hilda Davids, so perhaps she never married.
Rupert died in 1945, and was single.  A nephew, surname McKinley, was informant, so Blanche had at least on child. (Full image at Anc.)

In case anyone comes along with access to obituaries, Archibald Alexander Riddel(l) died in York,  15 Dec 1883. He was a physician.

There is a bit of a biography here but no mention of his children.

Hilda Isabel Davids obit in the Globe and Mail.  She died at her home, 23 Crestview Ave Toronto, on May 17, 1947.  Daughter of the late Joseph and Isabel Davids.  Sister of Blanche Thayer and the late Rupert Davids.  Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Blanche Thayer obit also in GLobe.  She died on June 2, 1970.  Mother of H G McKinley.  Grandmother of P, N and M.  Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Isabel Riddell David's death cert

Obit for Margaret Emily Riddell - who died in 1935 - doesn't give much information... she died after a lingering illness at Homewood Rest Home in Toronto.  Daughter of the late Dr and Mrs A A  Riddell.  Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.

Have a marriage for Cadet H G McKinley to Miss L MacPherson on May 9 1942 at St. Clements Anglican Church, North Toronto.  Photos of each of them in the Toronto Star, May 13 1942, page 24.

Toronto Star 8 July 1944 has "Officer Hurt in Italy".  Under this heading, it says that Lieut. H G McKinley (gives full names, but I am just using initials here), age 26, Toronto Irish, received facial wounds May 30 while in Italy.  Shortly after enlisting in Feb 1942, he married Miss L McPherson, who resides on Duplex Ave.  He went overseas in Oct 1942.  He is the son of the late Dr George McKinley and Mrs McKinley.  He was born in Toronto and graduated from the University of Toronto.
