Thomas Smith (of Stockton circa 1765) - olde directories?
« on: Monday 18 September 17 01:13 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Thomas Smith lived well before the censuses and the BMD and is therefore hard to trace.

I know that there are old texts listing the residents of towns and their occupations but I need a reminder of what they are and where to find them. Can anyone give me a few links that would be useful?

What I know so far is this:
() From Stockton On Tees, probably born between 1760-1770
() Married Mary Swainston, born 1769 in or near Hurworth
() Four daughters born to this couple 1798-1806, in Newcastle/North Shields
() While in Newcastle area, he worked as a sailmaker
All this information was found using FreeReg

I still don't know the birth, marriage or death of Thomas Smith.
I can't find him or his wife in the 1841C so I think they died before then.

As usual, any help is appreciated. However I feel that the important point now is knowing which ancient directories to search through for this period and location.

Cheers
-David C
