Mary Ann Keep [Wickens]
« on: Monday 18 September 17 20:09 BST (UK) »
Know her? She was my g. g. grandmother, and I have 2 pages on her life written many years ago.
What was her connection to Gloucestershire specifically in 1852-1860? [not '51 or '61]. Is there any way of tracing someone there anytime in those years?
Quick outline: b. 1809 Kingham, Oxford. Moved to Woolhampton, Berk. by 1830 and married Joseph Wickens in 1832. He, the gardener for Aldermaston manor, and she lived across from it for several  decades and had 11 children. Then they moved on first to Hants and then Surrey where she died June 1892.
Two Gloucestershire facts: her #11 child, Henry, was b. 1853 in Hempsted d. 1938 Surrey; and her #5 child, Israel [my g. grd.] lived in Glouces. in 1859 before going to London. He was a constable for 4 days, then dismissal with pay. I suspect for lying. He was 18 and the age required was 21.
There was a [cousin?] Timothy Wickens b. 1812 in Berk working in Aldermaston gardens with a wife Elizabeth b. 1816 in Guiting Temple, Glouces. But that's it. Why would Mary Ann go to Hempsted for a birth and why would #5 Israel, trained as a gardener by 18, go [town unknown] there to be a constable?

Hi

Looks like Joseph was working as a gardener at NEWARK HOUSE in Hempstead from the baptism record of their son Henry 1853, so possibly there for work.

Plenty of info on Newark House on the web.

If you Google:

There are 'recent' sale details, photographs of the house etc.

It would seem from various website: Newark House became a School and is on the 1861 census with

My goodness. What a response, and thank you. Logically, I guess you'd have a baby where your husband lived .
And, it looks like one used a parish record, which for after 1837 I never think about using.
Interesting, too, you spell it Hampstead and for that time I saw used and  thus I used Hampsted. Was it poor spelling then or did it change officially?

To be fair, Hempstead or Hempsted - it's spelt both ways when searching the net, but it was Hempsted in the parish register for Henry's baptism

I now have 3 paragraphs on the move in the 1850 and its motivation, much to your fine suggestions.
Three small facts I can't find. 1. the 1852 months [my parish record link doesn't cite the individuals] that Henry was born and 2. Austin died at age  They would indicate when the family lived at Newark. And, finally, 3. who is Richard Phillipps? [note: two ll and pp] I think he motivated the moved. Goggle seems no help, always showing me one P.
Any help, please.
