What is this saying please?
« on: Tuesday 19 September 17 05:30 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Could anyone help me decipher this census information for me?

I am not sure what is says above "Railway Inspector" nor what is says after "farmer 12 acres".

Any help would be most appreciated.

Best regards

Agree  - though I think it says contractor berneath with the last few letters scored through.

Can't find Toll Barr as an occupation, but there are toll booth or toll gate - neither of which looks like the word written there do they?

Turnpike Trusts  were empowered by Act of Parliament to erect barriers and collect tolls on a given stretch of road in return for maintaining it. A Contractor was some local farmer or jobbing craftsman who would undertake for a lump sum to keep a given stretch of highway in repair.

The Toll Bar was the barrier across the road where the tolls were collected by the person employed by the Turnpike Trust. In this case it looks as though the person was a farmer,  responsible for collecting the tolls and also for maintaing the stretch of road. It would help to know where and when this census entry is from, and the name of the person.
