Maria Barrow conundrum
« on: Tuesday 19 September 17 22:44 BST (UK) »
Hi.

1.  I have a Maria Barrow (born Ince) in the 1861 census aged 7 with siblings and parents William and Esther.

She married James Squire Holgate in 1878 at Prestwich St Mary.

1881 census shows her at "30 off 296 Huddersfield Rd, Oldham with two daughters Violetta (1879) and Lillia (1880).

Maria dies in 12/1882, Oldham 8d, 469.

1891 census shows a third child Eva Ingham born 1884 but James doesn't re-marry until 1895 (Annie Totty).

Was there a wife prior to Annie????

2. Strangely, I cannot find a birth for Maria (various sites tried)........!!?

Phil

Thank you

Image shows Eva Holgate freebmd shows Eva Ingham Holgate.  She is the grandaughter of James's parents so not necessarily James daughter

Have you looked for a birth on freebmd and then checked GRO online for her mmn?

Which one?

Eva Ingham Holgate is living with Uncle and Auntie in 1901.

There is a marriage between John Holgate and Jane Ann Ingham in 1887.

Could Eva have been treated as James' child to avoid disgrace?

Where on the 1891 census does it say that Eva is the daughter of James?

As said above - she is simply the granddaughter of James parents.  There is nothing to link her to James.

I realise that now. What I am suggesting is that Eva may be the daughter of the above two - John and Jane...?

Were you suggesting that Maria was illegitimate?
