cemetery's
« on: Wednesday 20 September 17 10:46 BST (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know the situations of any cemeteries in or around Chapelizord/ Pheonix Park   Dublin upto and including the 1900,s. I understand that a couple of them were located by taking the ferry across the river Liffy. I have ruled out the old cemetery at Mill Lane and also the one at St Laurence church. I am looking for a relative by the name of Mary Phelan, sister of Jim(James) Phelan, my grandad, who wrote many books and included radio and tv appearances. Jim died in london in the last
few years but not sure where he is buried. Would love information on either of these two requests. Thankyou. Lilian

Welcome to RootsChat,
When did Mary Phelan die and what age was she?
Jim Phelan would likely have a death notice in an newspaper or online which would mention his burial place.

Many Dublin Cemetery records can be found here

Hi Sinann, thanks for your prompt reply. Although James Phelan died in London I can find no record of his burial place or newspaper announcements. I am referring to the Jim Phelan who wrote over 28 books including The Names Phelan, Regarding Mary Phelan I have the 1911 census and she is mentioned on that as living at 2 Meath Market Ushers Quay, I have pictures of 1901 and 1911 census but don't know how to upload them to this site. She was 21 years old then and she must have died between 1911 and 1936/7 as my 86 yr old cousin (her nephew ) seems to remember going with his mother (Mary's sister) to Chapelizod to visit a graveyard, although he was too young at the time to say for certain who was buried in that graveyard. Her parents,my great grandparents, are both buried at Glasnevin (we only found them on a chance visit there 2 years ago) What I would really be interested in is finding if a 3rd graveyard did exist in Palmerstown/Chapelizod  Thanks again

This James Phelan.

1911 No.2  Meath Market
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Usher_s_Quay/Meath_Market/72241/

You found the grave of her parents in Glasnevin but did you get a read out of everyone buried in that grave just in case she is there but her name isn't on the headstone.

I'll have a look for Cemeterys now.
Bully's Acre is unlikely I guess think that closed a long time ago.

Doing a search doesn't throw up any thing you haven't tried already so I had a look on the OSI mapviewer, this only works on the old maps which is only up to 1913 so these graveyards may have been out of use when Mary died.
http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,711705,734894,7,9
Use the Menu on the right and choose Historic Layers
click Cemetery and grave yards and apply, you can zoom in on each one and see where it is.
Fingers crossed the link works.

You can lift and move the 'black box' out of the way.

thought this sounded familiar

you have the mother's burial in Glasnevin ,what is the date and address for that to see if her death is registered,i see James snr is registered 1916 at Meath Market by 1925 Pauline gives her address as Gardener's Lane on her marriage with Kate Phelan as witness
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1925/09139/5305536.pdf

addresses are important when searching the Glasnevin index

I think this might be Richard in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Merchants_Quay/Fingal_Street/1298858/
1911
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Merchant_s_Quay/Fingal_St_/64709/

The following is all supposition till proven otherwise
this Richard was born March 1890 to John Barrett and Mary Redmond
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1890/02431/1905330.pdf
note on the 1901 census his father John is a Brewery Labourer a good and secure job and sons tended to follow in their fathers footsteps
so i looked on Guinness Genealogy Archives and found Richard Barrett born March 1890 joined Guinness as a Malt Stoker 11/05/1911 and died in June 1968 his next of kin was given as spouse Patricia Barrett
so i looked for a marriage and found Richard Barrett a widower son of John married Patricia McCabe in 1928
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1928/09090/5288325.pdf
so looked for a death for Mary Barrett prior to this and found Mary age 24 died 1914 at 29 Ushers Quay
366 here
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1914/05312/4477961.pdf
she appears to be buried in Glasnevin age 23
