There is a James Potter in Ayrshire that might fit with the occupation you mention:

James Potter 67 shoemaker journeyman b. Ireland
Mary Potter 67
Janet Potter 35
Agnes Potter 30

Address: High Street, Ayr

Thanks for that Monica.  My James was married to a Jane Holdsworth unless he married again to a Mary and moved from Mid Lothian to Ayr. Daniel his son was also a shoemaker who lived in Dalkeith.  Gosh this part of my history is proving hard to decipher.

Well it has been ages since I posted and I am still no nearer finding James Potter.  Info I have he married at Cannongate Edinburgh in 1798.  I have the register entries at two churches on one he recorded he was a tanner and on the other was in the Shropshire Militia.  He married Jean/Jane Holdsworth daughter of Stephen.  Best man was John Bright.

Also on the marriage register it recorded that John Bright married Agnes Smith and James Potter was his best man. He was also in the Shropshire Militia.

The Shropshire Militia marched into Edinburgh in 1797.  Now I have been advised that to be in the Shropshire Militia you would be from that part of the country.

Although there are several James Potters born in Scotland I haven't found John Bright.

Can anyone help me unravel this conundrum as to whether both were from Shropshire area and what happened to them when the Militia disbanded in 1802.

James and Jane/Jean had a son Daniel circa 1799 not found his birth but when he married Helen Bolton they continued to live in Dalkeith.

Hope you can help
