RootsMagic 4 advice please, duplicated entry
« on: Wednesday 20 September 17 18:12 BST (UK) »
I have been using this programme for years but have found that a husband's family list now includes his wife and one of his children twice, even though they only appear once in the full list of names on the left of the screen.  The other children, entered at a different time, appear only once.  There was only one marriage for father and mother.

Any advice please?  I do not want to delete and replace either of the parents as I may lose all the data on them.

Ainslie

Have you tried "Unlinking" them and then putting them back together again? That sometimes works.

Yes, make a backup first just in case, then right-click on the wife and select 'unlink from spouse', then unlink the duplicate child from its parents if necessary. That may be enough, or you may need to re-link the wife to the family.

You might want to make a copy of anything relating to the marriage in case it disappears when you unlink.

Thanks to you both.  I crossed my fingers and unlinked, and all is well.  Sigh of relief!

If you want to be really careful you could also create a GEDCOM with just the wife and the son. Then you could import to your main family tree if you need to. Good Luck!!

I help at a local family history group. I dread it whenever someone has this problem! I am always scared I will erase all the info they have collected on one person!

That was my fear, but fortune favoured me - this time.
