St Dominc's church, Newcastle
« on: Wednesday 20 September 17 22:15 BST (UK) »
Any info about this church gratefully received. I think it was/is a Roman Catholic Church.
I have found the record of a baptism in 1875 which may just possibly be the start of a chink in a long-standing "brick wall" in our research.
Does the church still exist? Can one access its records?
I have found bap. of Joannis (ie John) West, son of Allen and Mariae ( Mary) McDonough West in Jan 1875 and would like to find any record at all of the births/baps of their other children Barbara, Allen, Catherine and, especially, Joseph. They appear variously in censuses, deaths, marriages etc but their births seem to be unrecorded.

Tyne and Wear Archives User Guide For RC Registers
https://twarchives.org.uk/collection/user-guides-and-information
Shows they have these records:

Newcastle, St Dominic's Priory (C.NC75)
x 1873-1947, m 1874-1953, d 1873-1970

You'd need to go to the Archives (In the Discovery Museum) to see them

Family Search Catalogue

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01krh/
- a magnifying glass against an entry means its a searchable database - click on the magnifying glass to search. a camera icon means you can see the images but only if you visit an LDS Family History centre.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kri/  That site appears to say the Church was opened in 1873 (which seems to be the starting date for the registers) so if the other children were born prior to that and the family were in Newcastle when they were born they were perhaps baptised at another RC church.

Thanks for the input, folks.
Looks like I shall have to visit N//C and go to the archives.
The other children were born between 1878 and about 1887 so if they were baptised they should be there. It remains a mystery that their births do not seem to have been officially registered, though.

I had a quick look round both FreeBMD and the GRO last night (having looked at the family on the 1881 census) and, agree there are no likely registrations in the right area for the other children which is very odd.

You said there was a Joseph too, do you have this family on any other census than the 1881?

Is there any possibility that the children may have had a different Father from another marriage?

I once found children seemingly not registered but then found out that they were the children from a previous marriage who had been given the surname of one of my ancestors.

Thanks for the replies.
I've floated this conundrum before but am always grateful for extra input.
The main reason why I want to find the birth registrations for little Barbara, Allen, Catherine and Joseph is that we need to prove that Joseph was the son of Mary and Allen West. He seems to have claimed to be that on his marriage cert but there is no record of his birth, nor that of his sibs.
Joseph claims ( census1911) to have been born at a date well after the death of his "father". His story told to my OH, his grandson, was that he had come from Ireland as a boy. Coincidentally settling in Newcastle at the same address as his re- married mother.
My reasoning is that possibly  he was older than he thought, was born just after his father's death and then sent as a baby to his mother's native Ireland to be brought up. No proof, however.
Am away from my research records for a few days, so apologies for imprecise response. Can add detail in a few days.
