Help finding my half brother
« on: Thursday 21 September 17 18:21 BST (UK) »
I would really like some ideas or help finding my half brother?  He doesn't know about me or my other brother at all.  I only know that he's older then me my dad had him around 16-18, his first name and where he was born.  That is all the information I have.  Do you think it's possible to find him with that little bit?

Welcome to Rootschat.

Rootschat is really meant for finding ancestors, not living people. However, I'm sure people will be able to give you advice. The main thing is not to mention his name if you think he is still living.

The biggest problem is that he will probably be registered under his mother's surname rather than your father's name. Do you know where he was born, and can you narrow down when he is likely to have been born? You could then try looking on Freebmd for that place and dates. Obviously this will be easier if he has an unusual first name.

Having said that though, I guess that if your father was only 16/18 when he was born, that the girl was also very young. This could mean that the baby was given up for adoption and his name changed. If that happened he might be very difficult to trace.

Good luck.

Hi Janet

Our guidelines for posting contains links for finding living people

http://www.rootschat.com/help/posting_guide.php

other than those, if you haven't done so already, register with the GRO, (although that might not be possible if you father can't work out what his full name at birth might have been)

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register

or here

http://www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk/default.htm

or here

http://www.missing-you.net/categories/adoptions.php

in the hope that he is looking for his birth family.

The chatters here aren't trained intermediaries and adoptions were usually of a sensistive nature, any advice we give can only be general.

It might be worth asking the adoptions team at your local council if they can give you any advice.

If you father can remember where his girlfriend was living at the time, electoral registers for the street might be useful.
