Census & Baptism Records Needed - Evans/Davies
« on: Thursday 21 September 17 23:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am helping a friend with their family history & am having a little bother in pinning certain people down on censuses. Certain parish records are also proving difficult to find.

My friends grandfather Thomas Evans (1882-1940) married in 1903 to Catherine Elizabeth Llewellyn (1886-1940). His parents were John Evans (1832/36-1906) & Letitia/Lettice Davies/David (1840/43-1913). John & Letitia married in 1879.

I have both John & Letitia on censuses after 1879, prior to this though I am struggling. John generally gives Lampeter/Lampeter Velfry, Pembrokeshire as a place of birth & Letitia gives Llanycefn, Pembrokeshire as her place of birth (although she does say Monclochog, Pembrokeshire) in 1881.

I have Letitia in 1861 as Lettice David age 20 & a Dairy Maid (RG9/4147/105/11), but cannot find her in 1841,51 or 71. Neither can I find a baptism for her. Ages on censuses give birth years as about 1840-43.

John, I have in 1841 (HO107/1448/10/22/7) aged 9 with parents William & Mary Evans in Lampeter Velfry. I am unable to locate him in 1851,61 & 71. Also not been able to find a baptism for him either. John was a Road Labourer or Labourer by trade on the later censuses. Ages on censuses indicate birth years of about 1832-36.

There is a possibility that John may have been married before as in 1881 (RG11/5404/75/11) he is with wife Letitia, a daughter Sophia aged 13 months & another daughter Mary A aged 10. Who was the first wife & when did she die?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Quoting from GenUKI (re Pembrokeshire):

A large number - well over 50% by the mid-nineteenth century - of people in Pembrokeshire attended Nonconformist chapels, rather than the established church. Thus, except for marriages which prior to 1837 had to take place in the parish church, references to them are more likely to be found in nonconformist than in parish church records. Many of these have been deposited at the PRO (and filmed by the LDS), others are still to be found with the chapels or other libraries or archives.

PRO = Pembrokeshire Record Office

What information does Lett*/ John wedding certificate give regarding their fathers and who were the witnesses - where did the marriage take place

Hi KGarrad & rosie99,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

KGarrard, Many thanks for that, much appreciated. I was unaware of that & will now start checking Non Conformist records.

rosie99, I don't know as the marriage date (year) came from FreeBMD & my friend does not have the certificate. I don't know where the marriage took place either as I haven't been able to find it on familysearch, FreeReg etc at all.

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi Mabel Bagshawe & Roger,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

Mabel Bagshawe, many thanks for 1841 & 1851 census info, much appreciated.

Roger, many thanks for detail re Sophia Foley, much appreciated.

Interestingly enough, as I mentioned on my OP, Letitia/Lettice named a daughter Sophia b1880 later in life.

My thanks again.

Kind regards
