Help to picture and read this please Llanfyllin picture
« on: Friday 22 September 17 10:35 BST (UK) »
Please can you help me read this??
It is written on the backing board of a watercolour believed to be of my great grandfather`s first father-in-law Richard Tibbot of Llanfyllin - he was a draper.
The inscription is hard to read so I thought a photo would show it but it is no better than real life (why did I think it would be?).

I think it says

Painted by
T M??
1849.

I had thought restorers may be able to enhance it but as it is not very visible in the first place I think I am wasting your time.
Any ideas please.

I have taken lots of photos and this is the best one.

Thanks

Jackie

Thanks Carol, I thought it said Martin but wanted other people`s ideas.

I found a T Martin living nearby in the 1851 census - he was a farmer of 20 acres born London. Is it likely a farmer did paintings? Can`t find a board to post on about paintings; there are three which I will post when I have pictured them, I don`t know how to decide if they are all by the same artist - looks likely to me.
Hope to post them tonight.

Thanks for your help

Jackie

Hi Jackie...Look forward to seeing them...I read somewhere that people often paid for goods or services with paintings in days gone so worthy of consideration.

A very, very long shot, but there is a Thomas Machin or Mackin of Staffordshire, described as "artist"in the 1841 to 1861 censuses at least. He is given as born approx 1811,but is mistranscribed as aged 4 in  the 1851 census in a well known database.
