Oh lord this is confusing

James Murray marries Sarah Mary Best.

Albert Richard Sandford marries Mary Sarah Best

1891
James Murray    21 - b Cardiff
Sarah Murray    20 - b topsham
Winefred Mary Murray    3 Weeks

Albert Sandford    22
Mary Sandford    20
Sarah Lltita Sandford    1

1901
James Murray    51 b Cardiff
Sarah M Murray    50 - b Topsham
Daisy Murray    8 - daughter  (mmn Best)
Albt Rich Sandford    32 - son in law b Topsham
Sarah Letitia Sandford    31 - daughter b Llwynypia
William E Sandford    7 - grand son   (mmn Best)
Amy Sandford    5 - grand daughter   (mmn Best)
William Reed    30

Jsut wondering if this is a total mess, and James & Sarah M should be 31 and 30, Albert should be brother in law, sarah his daughter aged 11 and William & Amy also his children?

I'm guessing Mary Sarah left Albert & took up with Herbert stephens

Thanks everyone this has certainly given me something to think about!!  I am looking this up for a friend and there appears to be some scandal in the family. I did wonder if Lee was a birth name. I'll continue to see what comes up, your ideas have definitely given me food for thought
 :)

Just found out the connection with Lee, checked the marriage of George Best and Ann M on BMD and came up with a marriage in the Sept qtr of 1851; shows the name as Ann Marie LEY. This explains why Alice's mum used the name Lee.  They say families research can be tricky, it certainly is with this family.

Although Alice Maud Stephen's birth certificate shows her father as Herbert Richard Stephens and her mother as Mary Sarah Stephens, nee Lee; they were never married. It appears that Mary Sarah Best AKA Lee, married Albert Richard Sandford in 1889 and had a daughter in 1890. However according to family she left Albert to live with Herbert Richard. No divorce is shown in GRO index and no marriage to Herbert- hence the scandal in the family.
Mary Sarah's father was George Best.
Mystery solved!!
