Help Needed to find a Marriage Record & Baptism Records.
« on: Friday 22 September 17 21:59 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I cannot find a marriage record for my 8x gt grandparents, nor can I find any baptisms for them.

Thomas Liew (?-1700) married Anna ? (?-1710) & had the following children:

Anna (1682-?)
Mary (1684-?) Married Andrew Bedla in 1710
Thomas (1689-1766) Married Elizabeth Brigs in 1710 (my 7x gt grandparents)

I can find nothing of them prior to 1682, they just seem to appear. All baptisms, marriages & burials took place at St Margarets, Chipstead. The marriage would I imagine have taken place sometime prior to 1682 unless there are more children born to them elsewhere.

Any & all help gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Do you think Ellis/Elias Liew who married Sarah is a brother or perhaps an older son?

He left a will even though he described himself as a labourer (proved 26 January 1736)

You may already have all of this.

BURIALS;
St Margaret, Chipstead
LIEW;
ELLIS 06 Jun 1694, Son of Ellis/Sarah
SARAH 17 May 1699, Daug of Ellis/Sarah
THOMAS 17 Oct 1700, Thomas Liew, Senior
ELIZABETH 13 Oct 1702, Widow. Died, 12th. Was wrapt in Woollen. Age 81
ANNE 25 May 1710, Wife of Thomas
THOMAS 10 May 1729
Other spellings;
ELLIS Lieu 06 Jan 1736/7
SARAH Lew 27 June 1750, Old Sarah Lew at the Star, aged 86

MARRIAGES same Church;
Andrew BEDLE to MARY Liew 06 Jul 1710
Elizabeth BRIGS to THOMAS Liew 30 Nov 1710, Groom of Colsden**
Joseph BENGE to BETTY Liew 14 Nov 1732 (very interesting Reg note on that one)

** I presume that is Coulsdon in south London?

All on FreeREG

Other than that I cant find anything for Thomas/Anns Marriage anywhere on-line.

I think there may be a connection between Thomas/Elllis though as they both name a Son Benjamin 1701/1716 in Chipstead.

Anc has a Marriage where the males spouses christian name is missing from the register;
26 Feb 1691
Marriage Place:   Saint James Dukes Place, London, London
- LEWES to Sarah BARNES

Trish :)

Hi amondg & Trish,

Many thanks indeed for your replies very much appreciated.

amondg, many thanks for the info, I think that Elias is possibly a brother of Thomas but I will need to check it out. Thanks also for the will info re Elias/Ellis, I will definitely check that out!

Trish, many thanks for the burial info, much appreciated. I do have some of it, but not all, I shall now of course get the rest! ;D Thanks also for the marriage info, much appreciated. Yep, colsden is indeed Coulsden in South London. I did indeed see that interesting note in the register re the Joseph Benge & Betty Liew marriage although I forget what it says offhand. I shall have a look at that 1691 Lewes/Barnes marriage in London as well, most interesting indeed!

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi all,

This is to update the Liew/Lew/Lieu research on this thread.

BURIALS;
St Margaret, Chipstead
LIEW;

ELIZABETH 13 Oct 1702, Widow. Died, 12th. Was wrapt in Woollen. Age 81

I am now almost certain that Thomas & Elias were brothers and sons of the Elizabeth above.

Elizabeth b 1620/21 died 1702 (Age 81) (Probably married sometime between 1640 -55.

Thomas born circa 1655/60 married Anna circa 1680 with offspring as noted in my OP.

Anc has a Marriage where the males spouses christian name is missing from the register;
26 Feb 1691
Marriage Place:   Saint James Dukes Place, London, London
- LEWES to Sarah BARNES

The above marriage is not the correct one, I have since found the correct marriage for Elias and Sarah.

Elias b circa 1660 married (as Elias Lew) Sarah Blaze (b 1663/64 - died aged 86 in 1750) on 22nd June 1693 at St James, Dukes Place, Aldgate, London.

Elias and Sarah had ten children as follows (all born and baptised at Chipstead, Surrey):

Elias Liew (1694 - 1694)
Thomas Liew (1695/96 - ?)
John Liew (1695/96 - ?)
Sarah Liew (1697 - 1699)
Elias Liew (1699 - ?)
Mary Liew (1701 - ?)
Benjamin Liew (1701 - ?)
Sarah Liew (1703/04 - ?)
Mabel Liew (1705/06 - ?)
Judeth (Judith) Liew (1707 - ?)

I am however, still missing Thomas & Anna's marriage.

Elias's will dated 14th January 1734/35 and proved 26th January 1737 mentions the following people:

Sons Thomas, John & Benjamin (described as 'my third son').
Jude (Judith?) Woodward & her daughter Nanny Woodward.
Daughters Betty & Sarah.
Son of Mabel King.
Daughter of Betty (I think the surname is Hayley?)
Daughter Mary's boy (Unnamed).
Son Thomas's youngest son Elias.

What happened to the second Elias b 1699? Was he dead by this time?
I haven't found a baptism for a daughter Elizabeth/Betty, I didn't actually know of her existence until reading the will!

Finding the marriages and the children mentioned in the will should keep me occupied for a while I suppose!

Kind regards

David

Hello David,
I can't add to your knowledge of this family except to suggest perhaps they were of Huguenot origin. The almost consistent spelling of Liew jumped out at me when I started to read this thread.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.
