If she was Polly then she was alive and with him in 1904, 2nd column:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article113294529

I think the article may be about their son Frederick Augustus, as he is buried at Manly cemetery, Sydney

Batterson Eliza Mrs S.410 20-10-1931 60 MD38

Batterson Frederick Augustus S.410 17-11-1952 71 MD38

Eliza's name is actually ESTHER on NSWBDM for her marriage and death.

It is his wife - before marriage - who was slandered by him and received the apology.

Added the death notice for Frederick Snr , 2nd column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article179801887

I can't find any reference to her, I did find her mother's remarriage though.  ;)

I think you can discount Polly, unless his mother was still alive.

sometimes used molly or polly for names

Could you show where Mary used these names, please?

I can see instances where her married children have them on death registrations on NSWBM - so not provided by Mary I'm sure - but cannot see where Mary has been referred to either name while living. Except where a Polly is mentioned as a witness in paper apology, but no proof that it's Mary.

Also, can you show her birth registration. I can only see Hannah, who married Frederick's brother with parents Thomas and Sophia at birth. An online tree suggests that Mary and Hannah may have been cousins.

If this is Sophia's death cert it could possibly indicate the name of her children.

I don't recall if it also shows whether living or deceased.

9870/1908 MCGEARY Sophia JOHN HANNAH KEMPSEY

If the informant on the Death Certificate was the same person who wrote this Obituary for the paper, then I feel it very likely the children of Sophia will be listed correctly.

These 2 obituaries make very interesting reading.

This for Sophia McGEARY

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/174464220

It makes it very clear what her legal name was at death and how many children of her 2 marriages.

This for Owen MCGEARY

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/214769594

Those writing his obituary make no mention of Sophia, but offer a very helpful timeline of his life. Quite likely the dates are not entirely accurate.

Totally speculative but...
I think during the time his Irish wife Bridget was not yet in Australia, he married Sophia. (1863)
When the wife arrived, she was cast out.

Of course it is possible there was more than one chap named Owen McGEARY and Sophia's husband was not this man

Anyhow it's not really helping with the main point of our inquiry. ::)
What became of Mary BATTERSON after the birth of her listed children?

Sue
