We are pretty stuck now though, aren't we Gadget. Hopefully when your friend confirms Patricia's details further, we can move forward a little more.

As Gadget mentioned earlier, nothing really showng for a McLaughlin as MP, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenock_(UK_Parliament_constituency)  He could have been a Council Councillor or have held a similar post?

Hi my great grandfather was a James McLaughlin but born in 1896 in Salford but grew up in Greenock, he was a gunner in ww1 and married to a Mabel mclaughlin in 1918. He was a mp in Greenock during during 20s/30s. The John mentioned in the last comment was his brother.
