URGENT: William Brown married: Mary Jane McLachlan, Otago-New Zealand 1800's

Hi All,

I am desperately trying to find sources (free might I add) that will allow me to reach further back from My Great-Great-Great-Grandparents:
William Brown b: 1886  d:1957
Mary Jane Brown (nee McLachlan) b: 1881 d:1962     Both buried in Clinton, South Island
Married 02/01/1912, and later divorced in 1955, Invercargill

I am aware they had 5 Children:
William Brown: b:03/03/1912 d:04/03/1912?
Hazel Christina Margaret Brown: b:1913 d:?
Allison Marion Myra Brown: b:02/05/1915 d:24/09/1989
Alexander Arthur Brown: b: 26/12/1916 d:01/02/1972
William Eion Brown: b:1917 d: ?

Also looking for the family of Alexander Arthur Browns Wife- Vera Edith Victoria Tippett

If anyone can provide missing details on the death dates, which will assist me in finding their headstones, along with Mary or Williams Parents or Siblings it would be gratefully appreciated

Just quickly advising that the marriage details in BDM have the spelling of Mary Ann's surname a little differently from yours

Unfortunately to really cement the fact that someone is your ancestor at some stage you will need to purchase a copy of a certificate or two from Births Deaths and Marriages. We can advise here so that you have every chance of getting the correct certificate.  But nothing will get around the need to purchase a certificate or two along the way. 

Having said that a good record to get a photocopy of would be the marriage certificate and the reference is above.  Get a photocopy of the original records. This is because the details on a marriage certificate is from the parties themselves and unless they are deliberately trying to confuse will be more accurate than say death certificates where others have provided the details.

Solely on the basis that families often named children for the mothers or fathers parent/parents these births in 1886 MAY be your William's ie second child first girl has the name Margaret as one of the first names.

I have found (on family search) the Will of William Brown, retired builder  who died in 1957. He appoints Mary Jane Brown as his executrix.

Childrens names from that will are
Myra Alison Marion Brown 
Arthur Alexander Brown
William Eoin Brown
Hazel Christina Margaret  Dorman
and Florence Mavis Mary McTaggart.

So another girl, six children in total?

I've marked it as urgent as I would love to get as much information in the next 12 days so I can present it to my grandfather for his 70th- as he knows very little about his extended family

Are you aware that Alexander Arthur BROWN and his wife Vera Edith V. BROWN were divorced in 1956 ?   She remarried in that same year.
