It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Joseph Pickavance is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial to the missing, many  of whom fell in the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele).  On the night of 30/31 December 1917, his battalion mounted an attack on enemy posts in an area known as Turenne Crossing north west of Ypres and it is likely that he fell during this engagement.  He has no known grave and the date of his death is recorded for official purposes as 1 January 1918.  The area is shown on the attached link, where the railway crosses the road in square V on the left of the map:

He had joined the army in late 1914 and went to France in early 1917 with his battalion after service in UK.  He left the pay the army owed him, £13 7s 3d, and his war gratuity of £14 10s to his father William.

Samuel Pickavance died of wounds in a hospital in the Boulogne area on 4 May 1915, it is not known exactly when and where he received the wounds.  A record notes that he was attached to the Royal Engineers and his battalion war diary records in April 1915 the attachment of men from his battalion as working parties assisting the Royal Engineers improving roads and second line trenches in the area north of Armentieres in the general area near the River Lys shown on the link:  http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15&lat=50.7059&lon=2.8950&layers=101464966&right=BingHyb
These parties were under constant shell fire and it is likely that he was wounded and evacuated sometime in late April.
He had joined the army at the beginning of the war and went to France with his battalion on 13 February 1915.  He left the pay the army owed him, £4 18s 3d and his war gratuity of £3 to his father William.

PS - This looks like some sort of brothers to war project or are they all relatives - intrigued to know.
