Welcome to RootsChat

You need to give a few more details before people can help you.  Where and when was John Rodney Clyde born ? Do you know his parents ?  Any other details that could help ?

Without any more information to work on the words haystack and needle come to mind :)

There is no birth, marriage or death of a John Rodney Clyde in the indexes to statutory civil registrations in Scotland. There are several John R Clydes, but all of their second names are spelled out in full and none is Rodney.

Searching online, the only reference to anyone of that name is in a list of junior Civil Service appointments the Belfast Gazette in 1969, so that looks unlikely to be your grandfather.

There are four John R Clydes in the England and Wales index as transcribed on FreeCEN
- birth in Newcastle on Tyne in 1923
- marriages in Bridge (Kent) in 1845 and Croydon in 1959
- death in London in 1947, aged 75; there is no probate record of this person 1947-1957. Nor is there any way to tell what the 'R' stands for in any of these listings without buying a copy of the certificate.

There is no reference to a John Clyde or a Rodney Clyde in the online database on the Families in British India Society's web site.

What was your grandfather's connection to Scotland?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Would I be right in thinking his name was John Rodney & born somewhere near Firth of Clyde/River Clyde  ???

As stated previously, more info. needed on dates/areas.

Luckily, if Rodney is the surname there aren't a lot i.e. should be easy to locate.

In an earlier post Evelynjobe mentioned her father ....Harold Oswald Jobe.....(looking for his RASC record); perhaps some information can be found via him?   :-\
