John SNELL
« on: Sunday 24 September 17 18:14 BST (UK) »
John and Ellenor (various spellings) SNELL had at least 7 children, all baptized in Ashreigny between 1690 and 1704. The only marriage I've been able to find is

20 Jul 1685   John SNELL and Elenor GRIGG   St David, Exeter

In the light of the time between this marriage and the earliest baptism (3 Aug 1690), and also the distance between Exeter and Ashreigny I'm a bit reluctant to accept that these are my ancestors.

Does anyone know of any other marriage(s) which might be a better bet?

Another way to look at this is were John & Elinor of Exeter baptising any children there 1685-1695?
A Mary SNELL was bapt to a John in 1692, Elizabeth in 1694, Will in 1696 all at Exeter St David; a Benjamin was bap at Exeter St Mary Major in 1695. More convincingly, an Elenor SNELL, wife of John was buried at Exeter 5 Dec 1710 Exeter St David. 'Your' Eleanor appears to have been buried at Ashreigney 20 Nov 1725.

The only other marriage I can find which ia remote possibility is

John Snel and Helene Loveband 9th Sep 2689 in Alverdiscott

According to the image of the register he was from the Parish of St Giles and she was from Yearncombe.

Alverdiscott is about 10 km from Ashreigny.

Hi DOB7,

Thanks for all that work. You've certainly proved that the Exeter SNELL family is not 'mine', for which I'm most grateful. 'My' John SNELL and Elinor almost certainly were born and married in or near Ashreigny ( or should that be Ashreigney?). I can't find John in Ashreigny, but I have found some John's nearby viz:-

19 Dec 1663 John to John & Thomsen in St Giles-in-the-Wood (6.4 miles)

17 Apr 1666 John to Anthony & Joane in Atherington (6.5 miles)
06 Dec 1669 John to     do           do            do

My target date was 1670, based on John's earliest child and probable marriage, so I'll shift my focus and see what I can find in these nearby parishes.

Again, thanks for your help.

Hi emeltom,

I think that you've found the marriage I need. My target date was 1690, so what you've got is spot-on and the bride's name is an excellent match, and not very common.

As the groom was from St Giles, it looks as if I've already found him and, thanks to you, I now know where to look for the bride.

Very many thanks

To add to that -  I don't think they were known in Ashreigney because the first baptism in 1690 leaves the wife's name blank as if the minister didn't know it. The John son of John & Thomsen in St Giles seems likely given that he then named one of his children Thamzen.

Agreed. It looks as if that little root is now sorted.

Many thanks to you both

Hi DOB7

I notice you have LILLICRAP on your list of interests. I have a couple of links around Okehampton from 1718 to 1768. might there be a fit?

I probably have details of them as I have pretty much conducted a one-name study.
