William McDermott, Bawnboy
« on: Sunday 24 September 17 19:40 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace birth records of my grandfather. From R.I.C. service records and death certificate it is likely to have been in 1875 but no joy so far. Family believed to be from Bawnboy area, possibly Derrycassan? Lost complete touch with his Cavan family. Police service took him to Clonmany, Donegal, Coagh,Tyrone and Dundrum, Down before retirement 1922. Died Coleraine, L'derry 1936. Married Jane Butler McCandless (Kindroyhead, Donegal), 1908, Edinburgh. had 9 children.
Any help would be appreciated with birth record and Cavan family. Parents believed to be Thomas McDermott and Mary Donohoe, married 1868. Possible sister Margaret.

Hello and welcome  :)

Did William marry in Edinburgh and is that where you have his parents names from?

Here is Margaret's birth https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1869/03407/2249267.pdf

Hi,
My only interest is that I'm trying to help you as you are trying to trace birth records.
I did quite a bit of searching yesterday with no success - as yourself - and as a consequence enquired re his parents.
I wanted to clarify the information given as you presumably have his parents from his marriage certificate but wrote that you 'believe' his parents to be Thomas and Mary and the 'possibility' of his sister.
If his parents married in 1868 and the birth of Margaret is as I sent you and William's birth year is correct, you would expect more children but I haven't yet found them either.
Could he have been born in Scotland?
Regards
Heywood

I though service records usually gave a place of birth? Where was William (and his family) in 1901 and 1911? and what's given for his place or birth in those records?

Thanks Aghadowey and Heywood for you information and time. I do have all the records you have attached apart from the American link to a possible sister, Mary. I use the term 'possible' in this and previous post as I can't be 100% that this is the right family connection especially with no sibling birth records between 1869 (Margaret) and the year of 1875 when I believe he was born. His police service record only gives his native county but, sadly, not DOB but it does help to narrow this down to approx. May/June 1875 as his age, on appointment (4.4.1899) was 23 yrs and 10 months. Obtaining his birth record would clear that up the family connection. As to 1901 census William is resident in police barracks in Clonmany, Donegal. Took me a while to work that one out.
