Connecting the Names....
« on: Tuesday 26 September 17 01:19 BST (UK) »

PRINCE ELIZABETH 85 Years, Burial, Died 11 Feb 1957

Her New Zealand marriage:

1912/4339 Elizabeth Hughes  Robert McCrachen  Prince

Her death notice:

From 'The Otago Daily Times' dated February 12th-

Prince- On February 11th 1957 at her son's residence, 449 South Road, Caversham, Elizabeth Prince of 419 South Road, widow of Robert McCracken Prince and loved mother of Bet (Mrs. Ezra Dobbie, Auckland) and William Kirkwood, in her 86th year.

I do not know where the Kirkwood name comes into the story.

I have not been able to find details of her daughter, Bet who as Elizabeth DOUGLAS married Ezra Augustus DOBBIE in 1920 in New Zealand.

The death notice for Ezra Augustus (who died in Auckland on 7.7.1962) mentions his wife Elizabeth; loved father of the late Betty (Elizabeth Clarke Dobbie, she died in 1949 @ Lower Hutt) and stepfather of T, (Mrs. G.) &  male Douglas, Wellington.

[1928/3094   Ida Eveline   Wilson   William   Kirkwood ---No issue.]

Hoping someone may be able to help please.

Minniehaha.

P. S. The "years in New Zealand" recorded for William Kirkwood is incorrect. It is most likely that he arrived with his mother around 1911.

A 1901 Scottish census fits the ages of both Elizabeth and William

Liston Kirkwood  head aged 36
Elizabeth Kirkwood           wife aged 29
Maggie  Kirkwood            daughter aged 4
William  Kirkwood              son aged 2
Alexina Liston Kirkwood     daughter aged 0
Dora Kinloch Erikson      Relative aged 9

All living at North Kinglass, 1, Boness & Carriden, Carriden, Linlithgowshire (West Lothian), Scotland

Cheers Janette

Leston and Elizabeth KIRKWOOD also appear in the English 1911 census at Great Bentley Essex with children Maggie, William, Liston, John, George and Alexander and "mother" Margaret KINLOCH and Brother-in-law John KINLOCH (hope that's not a breach of copyright?)

Thank you Janette. Those are the correct people. Mother is shown as Mrs. E. H. Kirkwood, housewife. This could indicate that Mr. Kirkwood was still alive, perhaps?

Since putting up the post I have been sent a copy of the marriage printout for son William Kirkwood. His father is shown here as William Kirkwood and mother as Elizabeth Prince, nee Kirkwood. Maiden name Hughes.

Although the ages fit, I'm not certain about the census details, yet. Daughter Elizabeth would have been born prior to emigration. :)

Liston KIRKWOOD aged 47 (married) immigrated to Canada - he's on a passenger list in April 1912 on the Grampian

It would appear that Liston and Elizabeth KIRKWOOD died in Canada - buried at Oakwood Cemetery Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario.

So I don't think the couple on the 1901 Scotland census and 1911 England are yours.  ;)

Thanks Maddy,

As they say, a negative can be a positive. In this case you have ruled out a family. It is all good.  :)
