David Ribbans marr. Jun ¼ 1853 Ipswich to???
« on: Tuesday 26 September 17 02:51 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have recently found several marriages some in Middx, Surrey & Suffolk, with the family name of "Ribbans/Ribbons/Ribbens" and am trying to identify and if possible to fit them into my tree.

One such marriage is for a David Ribbans in Ipswich, jun qtr 1853  to either a Sarah Baldwin or an Eliza Cheese. Is anyone able to help  with more details such as the correct wife and if possible who his father was please?

I'm not sure ... but in the 1871 census there is a David RIBBONS (wid) 36, from Ipswitch with a George BALDRY, 61 as lodger. The children in this household have mother's maiden name BALDREY on their registration (at Edmonton), so possibly David married Sarah BALDWIN/BALDREY?

David Ribbons     36    Ipswich, Suffolk
Jane Ribbons           11    Enfield, Middlesex
Frederick Ribbons    8    Enfield
Albert Ribbons            7    Enfield
Charles Ribbons         4    Enfield
George Baldrey       61    Woodbridge, Suffolk

GBC/1871/1343/0248

RIBBANS William Charles     mmn   BALDREY 1867  J Qtr  EDMONTON 03A/197
RIBBANS Albert Edward       mmn   BALDREY  1864  J Qtr   EDMONTON  03A/164
RIBBANS George Frederick    mmn   BALDREY  1862  M Qtr  EDMONTON   03A/144
RIBBANS Mary Jane            mmn      BALDRY  1860  J Qtr  EDMONTON  03A/146

Sorry, just ignore the above ... have found a baptism for Mary Jane RIBBANS at Enfield 1860 with parents David and Annie Elizabeth - so not Sarah BALDWIN.  :-[

There are however RIBBANS children registered at Ipswitch with mother's maiden name CHEESE:
eg
RIBBANS, Frederick  1859  J Qtr IPSWICH  04A/582
RIBBANS, William     1857  M Qtr IPSWICH 04A /571

Possibly more, I haven't looked yet. So more likely David married Eliza CHEESE, though I can't see them on a census.

Added: This looks like Eliza in 1871
Eliza Ribbans    Widow    45    Ireland (laundress)
Mary Ann Harrison    Niece    21    Manningtree, Essex
William Ribbans     Son       14    Ipswich, Suffolk (boot shop assistant)

Hi Maddy,

Thanks for your reply. You are not far off as I have found a marriage entry for a David Ribbens to  Anne Elizabeth Baldrey 22-6-1859 Enfield, Middx. The indications (from on/line trees) is that Ann died about 1869 although I have not found any records yet.
It would appear that David married  again on 25-1-1872 in the Congregational Church, Edmonton to Sarah Odell and they went on to have another 5 children.
Edited;  I believe that David was the s/o Jonathon Ribbans & Eve (nee Goodall)  born in Little
Bealings 1832.

The George Baldrey was Elizabeth's father.

All good stuff.
