Donald McKenzie possible family - Help needed
« on: Tuesday 26 September 17 05:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have had a brick wall concerning Donald Mackenzie (McKenzie)  from Kincardine, Rossshire for many years.
Donald Mackenzie went to India aboard the ship “Waterloo” and the Depot Description list states that he was from Kincardine, Ross.
It gives his age as being 22 in 1822 when he enlisted. However his burial record in in 1867 states his age as 71 making his date of birth about 1796. I was unable to obtain any further information from this document other than he was a labourer. No parents etc. were listed.
However, I recently came across a letter written by the minister from the church in Dingwall, Ross.
The letter was written in 1875 by Rev. Ronald McAlister and was in response to enquiries made by one of Donald’s sons requesting information on Donald’s family.
Firstly, the letter states that Donald was a native of Nig (Nigg?)
It then goes on to say that Donald had 4 brothers, namely, Alex, John, Robert & William and also 3 sisters, Lillias, Isabella and Catherine. All of whom are dead with the exception of William who is 88 and resides at Tain, Ross-shire.
He then goes on to say that Alexander has left 4 of a family, John 2, Robert 5 & William 5, the majority of which reside in Ross-shire.
Lillias died unmarried and Isabella left 5 of a family. Catherine’s family are all dead.
I tried finding William on the 1871 Scotland census but could not find any possibilities. I also looked for Lillias in earlier census’ as she was unmarried but wasn’t able to determine whether I had the correct one.
Also, the obituary for one of Donald’s sons who died in India states that he came from Nigg, even though he was born in India.
My query then is – where do I begin searching. Is Nigg the starting point?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,

So far circa dates born...

William 1787 - 1790
Donald 1796 - 1800

Looking at those this could be Lilias (as Lilly) which would have her b c 1791 & the area of death is same as the possible for William?

MCKENZIE LILLY
66
1857
080/ 13
Rosemarkie and Fortrose

Added...There's no corresponding name/date/age with any other surname i.e. likely died a spinster.

"Alexander has left 4 of a family, John 2, Robert 5 & William 5"

Looks as though Robert & William were twins!

Did you forget to list the 4th child or was it omitted (unknown)?

Hi,
I'm not sure why you think Robert & William were twins.
I believe the numbers relate to the number of "offspring" for each of them
Refer to the letter attached in the original post for clarification.
Also, do you have references for your suggestions?
Thanks,
Hilary

I couldn't download the letter at that point (which I have now)  ;) & I can see by how it was written I misunderstood although I did wonder about (what I thought were ages) ::)

Apologies on the references which are from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (Scottish Government site) which holds all Scottish Certificates of BMDs etc. & is pay-per-view by credits (not expensive) although FREE to join & FREE Index to search.

There are many FREE sites for transcriptions of Census Records, BMDs etc. but the originals of all Scottish Certs. can only be purchased at above site.

What were the names of Donald's children in order as this can be helpful if the naming pattern was used?

Possible Baptisms, no mother recorded on index i.e. there's a possibility of no mother's name on the actual register;

MACKENZIE WILLIAM
JOHN MACKENZIE
12 DECEMBER 1800 NIGG ASSOCIATE ROSS AND CROMARTY

MACKENZIE CATHRINE
JOHN MACKENZIE 19 SEPTEMBER 1802 NIGG ASSOCIATE ROSS AND CROMARTY

MACKENZIE ALEXANDER
ROBERT MACKENZIE
12 JUNE 1812
1812 NIGG ASSOCIATE ROSS AND CROMARTY

The only deaths I could find for a Lil (name beginning with) in areas mentioned were;

1883

MCKENZIE LILY 84 Nigg (Ross and Cromarty) 078/ 3
MACLEOD LILY 84 Nigg (Ross and Cromarty) 078/ 3

1879

MCKENZIE LILY 80 Tain 082/ 5
MCCULLOCH LILY 80 Tain 082/ 5

Matching details for Ref. No. would signify married i.e. can be discounted.

Possible deaths with family name which isn't common but hard to tell not knowing who parents were, mothers maiden name or when parents married/died;

1908 MACKENZIE ROBERT 74 (c1834) Nigg (Ross and Cromarty) 078/ 12
1934 MACKENZIE ROBERT 77 (c1857) Nigg (Ross and Cromarty) 078/ 9
1928 MACKENZIE ROBERT 69 (c1859) Nigg (Ross and Cromarty) 078/ 5

The deaths for a William in Tain don't match very closely with his age of 88 (c1787) yrs given in 1875 which was the reason I hadn't posted earlier (as with the ones for 'Lil' but for ref);

1878 MCKENZIE WILLIAM 100 (c1778) 082/ 18 Tain
1878 MCKENZIE WILLIAM 84 (c1794) 082/ 62 Tain
1885 MCKENZIE WILLIAM 85 (c1800) 082/ 32 Tain
