I suppose that the "Winnifred Jessie" is more likely. I did find it strange at first. Is there a date of that publication and newspaper name?

Ah yes, of course. I didn't read Winnifred's obit closely enough.

It looks like some smaller print at the center top indicates....

The Guardian Charlottetown Monday September 17 1962

I wonder if the W J in the obit for Winnifred might be for Winnifred and the initial of a second name?

PB

Of course!!  I guess I am so used to women using their husbands' names/initials.... "Mrs Joe blogs" etc... in older papers.  I should have noticed that those were her own initials :P.  Oops.

RK (feeling very silly at the moment!!)

That would be the Guardian, Sept 29, 1962.

Perhaps you could contact the cemetery and find out when Gilbert died.  I expect he is buried with his wife.  If you can get a date of death, you can check the newspapers for an obituary.  Here is the search page

An online tree at ancestry shows Gilbert McWilliam Caldwell born 1905, parent James Caldwell and Margaret McWilliam.
This tree links him to a marriage to Carmen Dorothy Renaud (1920- 12 Nov 1982 Barrie, Ontario) and Gilbert's death 1984 (no date)  Barrie, Ontario.  The couple can be found in Voters Lists for Simcoe County (where Barrie is located) in 1957 and onward.  Gilbert a RCAF cook.  Barrie newspaper index shows daughters born in 1954 and 1955.  Tree shows three daughters.
They have linked the same passenger list as you noted.
????  Have those little green leaves led someone astray or was there a break-up and a second family

Another tree has Gilbert's birth as 28 Apr 1905 Johnstone, taken from his father's service record (link is included) and his death as 28 Feb 1983 in Barrie Ontario.

I wonder if there might be a newspaper obit?

It seems very odd that Gilbert wasn't mentioned in Winnifred's obit and I too was wondering if there might have been a break-up of their marriage.
