Thank you so much for this guys! I think Gilbert has remarried at some point. Interesting that Winnifred's surname was still Caldwell at the time of her death if they did divorce.

You could check with the Barrie Library to see if they would look up an obituary for you for Gilbert.  That way you might verify a second marriage.  Online trees are sometimes suspect - very easy to mix up families.
Had an aunt who divorced in the early 60s and she maintained her married name until her second marriage 10 years later.

Property transfers for various houses including the property owned by Gilbert and Winnifred Caldwell.  Does his transfer of property to her in 1948 indicate a split in the marriage?

Thank you for everything guys! I have even managed to track down some relatives in Canada! There was one other query/person I am interested in tracking down, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Donnelly nee. Caldwell (this was Gilbert's younger sister). She was born in 1907 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, married in 1935 in Johnstone to David Donnelly, after that the trail goes cold! I have been led to believe she too emigrated to Canada, her eldest sister Margaret emigrated to British Columbia in 1951, however I have not been able track down Elizabeth.
