Murtaghs of Faughalstown
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 04:18 BST (UK) »
Hi - I'm looking to see if anyone can help fill in some information on the Murtagh family from Faughalstown.  Ann Murtagh (my great grandmother) was born around 1859 and died in June 1947.  She was mother to Kate and Matt Carrigy which we received great help with in this chat; http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=736235.msg5820086#msg5820086

And Ann is also mother to the Carrigys in this thread; http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=131435.msg6331129#msg6331129

While I can find info on Murtaghs in and around Faughalstown, I can't confirm who Ann's parents and siblings were.  I tentatively have her parents as William and Elizabeth.  Ann's husband was Peter Carrigy b. 1848, d. 1933.

Any help would be much appreciated as always.

Thanks for your help Sinann.  This one has me stumped.  Griffiths lists Murtaghs as tenants in Faughalstown but can't find a record to tie Ann in at all.

Hi
Have you tried the  parish  Mayne for baptisms which includes Faughalstown

Anne Murtogh d of William and Ann Murtogh 4 Sep 1861
Godfather Dan Rutherford and ---
It is the same parish she married in.
Her entry is quite crumpled and her mother's maiden name is illegible.

There's a Bridget 11.2.1871 d of william Murtagh and Anne Lynch of Coole
Mary 21.8.1863,Catherine 3.3.1866,Edward 20.7.1868,Elizebeth 7.10.1873,William 30.3.1876

They married 8.3.1859 wit Pat Donnely and Mary Murtagh

I'm sorry I don't  know the area well enough to know if Coole is near Faughalstown.

Had a look at Murtagh deaths from 1891 to see if a Carrigy relation was the informant on any but no joy.
Might be worth trying again when older death cert images come online.

When you look at the CARRIGY family baptisms in Coole Parish, there are a few sponsors named MURTAGH/MURTHA
LINK to Parish Records

Jul 23 1882; Patrick Joseph; Sponsors: Dermod CARRIGY & Mary FAGAN
Aug 14 1883; Brigid Mary; Sponsors: Brian RODEN
Jan 16 1885; Bernard; Sponsors: Edward SMYTH & Julia MURTHA
Jul 25 1886; Mary Anne; Sponsors: Edward & Bridget FARRELLY
Jul 01 1888; Mathew; Sponsors: William MURTAGH & Anne FAGAN
Jun 08 1890; Catherine; Sponsors: John REILLY & Elizabeth MURTAGH
Jan 24 1892; John; Sponsors: James CASSIDY & Margaret MURTAGH
Sep 16 1894; Mary Jane; Sponsors: Thomas WARD & Bridget CARIGY
Jun 17 1897; Elizabeth; Sponsors: Bernard CARRIGY & Mary FAGAN
Jul 23 1899 ; Joseph; Sponsors: Bridget CARRIGY & Anne CARRIGY
c1901; Julia - not online
c1904; Thomas Anthony - not online
c1906; Christina - not online

There are several possibilities for Ann's birth in Coole Parish
bap. Dec 12 1859 to Willam & Anne MURTAGH
bap. Apr 11 1860 to Mathew MURTAGH & Elizabeth PLUNKETT
bap. Aug 5 1860 to Darby & Anne MURTAGH
bap. Sep 04 1861 to William MURTAGH & Anne LYNCH

and based on naming patterns in Mount Nugent Parish
bap. Oct 04 1857 to Patrick & Jane SMYTH
noting that there is a sponsor named Edward SMYTH

This may or may not help but at least gives additional names to work with that are most likely related
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller
Further generations:
Brophy Coleman Eathorn(e) Fahy Fitzpatrick Geraghty Haverty Keane Keogh Nowlan Rowe Walder

Hi, I searched with just Murtagh and Faughalstown and saw a few births.
Peter
James
No Ann listed
Parents Matthew  (Matt) Murtagh and Ann Ward.
and then a private tree is listed with the Carrigy's. (this must have the same names listed)

I have an update for this thread:

Ann Carrigy (née Maurtagh) parents were Matthew Murtagh and Elizabeth (Bessie) Plunkett (b. ~1818)

Ann had three sisters; Margaret Murtagh (b. 1857), Julia Thornton (b.1863), Rose M Kennedy.

I've not been able to identify Rose's husband yet if anyone can help out there.

And I've not been able to identify Elizabeth (Bessie) Plunkett's family yet.
