William CAMPBELL - LOOKUP Request
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 16:19 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I've been hunting for information about an ancestor named William Campbell for some time now. He was born c.1812 in Johnstone (from 1841 and 1851 census records) and married a woman named Ann Reid in Abbey Paisley on the 15th June 1839. They had many children, nine in total it would seem. Ann Reid was born on the 14th April 1811 in Boghall, Lanarkshire before passing away on the 8th September 1892 at the Govan Poorhouse sadly. However, for William I cannot find any birth or death records. My hope is to find his parents' names and push the Campbell line back further.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Tony

What was William's occupation on the 1841/51 censuses?

When was their 9th child born?

What is Ann's marital status on 1861-1891 censuses?

Who was the first of their children to marry?  Is William shown as deceased on the marriage cert?

Hi Carole,

In 1841 he was a "Cotton Spinner" but by 1851 he was a "Grocer and Spirit Merchant".

His eighth and ninth children were twins, born in 1855. Both died tragically within a day of their births.

From the marriage records he died sometime after 1880 and before 1892. Ann Reid was a widow on her death in 1892 and he is listed as living on his daughter's death record in 1880, and on his other daughter's marriage in 1880.

Thanks,

Tony

I haven't seen those census records and can't access them for now.

But it seems he was alive at 1881. His daughter Euphemia died in 1881 (not 1880 - my earlier mistake) and her "father was present". So he definitely died between 1881 and 1892.

Just a thought...

Where did Euphemia die & was it in a different town from where wife Ann died?

Just wondering if Ann had moved after William's death?

I wonder...

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ksq/

Not helping with his death but if that's him he may have gone elsewhere  ???

Case was concluded 1881 but no exact date i.e. may have been prior to census?

Just to clarify the reasoning of Carole's question of whether Ann was a widow on census' 1861 - 1891...

They could have been separated & she not necessarily a widow.

There are quite a few deaths on SP between 1881 - 1892 which would fit Williams age, some of which allow for a margin of error as ages can often be out on death certs.

"His daughter Euphemia died in 1881 and her "father was present"

Where was William on 1881 census, was he at home with Ann or elsewhere?
