William REID - LOOKUP Request
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 16:24 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I'm looking for details on an ancestor of mine's named William Reid. He was born c. 1771 in Glasgow and married a woman named Euphemia Marylees on the 3rd June 1797 in Old Monkland or Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. He appears on the 1841 and 1851 censuses but after that I can't find anything else out about him. His occupation was as a Handloom Cotton Weaver. This is quite interesting - in the mid 1840s this job became useless and paid very little. He'd have been one of the last people to be doing it by 1851. His wife was born on the 6th July 1778 in Boghall, Lanarkshire and died on the 05 June 1869 in ripe old age at the same place. I'm hoping to flesh out William Reid's story - i.e. find a birth and death record, but particularly work out who his parents were.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony,

Was Euphemia a widow in 1861?

Where were they living in 1851 & where was Euphemia in 1861?

Hi Annie,

I haven't purchased the 1861 census but it seems highly likely, since William would have been around 90 years old at 1861. Don't know at all when he died. If it were before 1855 this will be more difficult. But I'd imagine it isn't impossible at all.

Cheers,

Anthony

Old Monkland or Coatbridge
Just for clarification, the town of Coatbridge is in the parish of Old Monkland.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
