Benjamin LACY, born 1837, Montreal, Canada, lived in Bath, Somerset
« on: Thursday 28 September 17 15:53 BST (UK) »
Hello,

NB: This enquiry possibly should also refer to SURREY

Benjamin LACY may have married either Mary ALLNER or Elizabeth McDONALD in the second quarter of 1865 in Lambeth (Free BMD 1837-2005).   Could someone please confirm which of these two ladies became Mrs. LACY and then ascertain if she subsequently died prior to 1870.

Thank you for your help.

Hi.

Judging by the 1867 birth of Benjamin Lacy he has a mother maiden name of McDonald on the gro search. An Elizabeth Lacy born @1840 dies in Newington in 1869. Benjamin senior remarried to Mary Davis in 1870 in St Saviour Southwark. Davis step children present from 1871 census onwards.

Tazzie,

Excellent research.......if I read your post correctly Benjamin LACY did marry Elizabeth McDONALD, and she died in 1869.   He certainly married Mary DAVIS in 1870.

Problem solved.

Again my thanks

Been doing some digging around and have more info on his father and family.

Aged 18 Benjamin snr is in Canada serving in 32nd foot soldiers. Height on joining was 5'5" fair complexion grey eyes and light brown hair. He stated he was born Warminster Wilts a labourer and he attested in Bath. Ancestry has his age as 10 but it is definitely 18.
He is recorded in the Chelsea pensioners admission and discharge papers....26th September 1838 aged 41 of 32nd foot under Sir R Macforland.

Thank you Tazzie,

With your help over his first marriage my Biography for Benjamin LACEY (LACY) is now almost complete, except for that 10 year portion between 1855 and 1865......possibly he enlisted in the Army but no confirmation as yet.   His was an interesting life.   He should have been transported for 7 years but this was commuted to imprisonment, married three times and all-in-all had about 10 children (stepfather to 8 of them).......he also re-offended in 1874 and spent about 5 months in gaol.

His father, an ex-soldier pensioner, appears to have been an extremely violent man, beating hs wife, for instance, and he died in 1858.   There are quite a few newspaper reports describing the father's convictions for violence.

Your help has been invaluable: I am very grateful: joy of joy to find the answer to that 10 year gap. ::)

Sincerely
