Archives lookup please HOOK
« on: Friday 29 September 17 08:47 BST (UK) »

A very non – urgent look up, if possible, please.

There are two items in the archives regarding Lewis Hook.

One is an application in 1883 for a position as  coxswain:

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24281133

The other an application in 1892 to move the body  of the late George James elsewhere in the Karori  cemetery.

 https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24742479

How George James is related to him, I have no idea.

Either one will suffice if it is written in his own hand – I just want to compare the signature with that on an 1854 British Navy enlistment form.

Thankyou

Barbara

Thanks Lu

Something else I didn't know :)

Only just started with the Hooks and have been trying to discover which of the two Lewis Hooks in England was him.I think his death cert has the wrong info.( and the tree swipers on Ancestry have copied it far and wide!)

After I posted this request,I had a quick look at papers past and found an article about a benefit being held by the boilermakers society to raise funds for the widow of George James and the Karori burial, but hadn't made the connection to the family.

And wouldn't probably found it if I hadn't wanted a sample of his handwriting :)

Perhaps he was initially buried in a paupers grave? Will find out soon, won't I ?

It looks like their son may also have died :(

Hi Spades

Wow! I can't thank you enough :o

Not only does the signature match ,but I have a detailed description of where he was from 1854.

Except that he says he left the Navy in 1854,when the enlistment papers say he had re-enlisted for 10 years on HMS Spy in 1854 after previous service of 3 years 7 months in the merchant navy.
HMS Spy went back and forth from South America regularly,so this fits perfectly with his joining the Brazilian Navy.Though whether he took his discharge in the normal fashion is questionable ???

I've been banging my head against this particular brick wall for years and years.

So excited  ;D ;D ;D

Many many thanks

Barbara.

Hi barbara,

I'm very pleased to hear the documents helped; I was excited for you when I read his letter.

I did wonder if Lewis HOOK's involvement in the navies of Brazil and Peru might have a connection to those nations early attempts at independence, but Peru declared independence in 1821 and Brazil in 1822.

But he might have been involved in later actions of the Peruvian Navy such the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy (1836–1839) and the Chincha Islands War with Spain (1866).

Look for campaigns involving the Brazilian Navy as well. Both would have been desperate for trained seamen and those with specialist and leadership skills.

Going completely off tangent, he was far too late to have been present at the War of the Pacific (1879-1884) fought between Bolivia, Chile and Peru (one outcome being the fact that Bolivia became a land-locked country).
