The quickest way to find information (or lack of) regarding Lewis's service in the navies of Brazil and Peru would be to write to the embassies of those countries.

I don't about the Royal Navy but the British Army certainly had Discharge Papers (they usually provided a physical description of the veteran soldier to avoid impersonation and to ensure they paid their pension monies to the correct individual presenting himself to collect it!).

So I think he was being truthful. Another thing to enquire about.

Can anyone find any record of a Lewis HOOK serving in the Royal Navy circa 1840-1854?

Yes, one and the same.

I found and paid to download it last week and it is the signature I was hoping to match.

Looking at it again,I can't see any reference to the previous service I mentioned,so perhaps I found it elsewhere ,though it does mention another vessel - Looks like Viscount Lampton of Rochester.

I can send  the file via email (presuming I can't post it here due to copyright?) if it is helpful, though there are the usual basic details- physical description, health etc.But it does have a service number.

I found some information on the Spy,and read it briefly to see where it (she) was bound.I guess he could have signed on a crew with any vessel NZ bound. Will check the shipping records on Family Search.

I was being facetious about the discharge papers, given that he signed up for 10 years and was in NZ by 1858 according to the application.

Thanks
Barbara

Thanks for the links -it was Captain Robert Francis Boyle, following the first link, who signed him up.

Just looked at the second link - very helpful ,thanks.

All this is much more exciting than sailing around the NZ coast ;D

I have remembered why I thought Lewis had about 3 1/2 years previous service. But it doesn't tie in with what he says in his application:

"I was in the British Navy three years and seven months from 1850 to 1854"

I found him in Rochester on the 1851 census, living with his parents and working as a glazier, which was his Father's trade.Which means at the most, his service could have been three years five months ???

He is the same person as the Navy recruit because the date and place of birth- 1st January 1835,Maidstone- is correct.
