1861 Census Puzzle
« on: Friday 29 September 17 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hello All
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the following:
My 3x Grandfather  John Robson born 1840, gave his address as 5 South Nicholson St Sunderland when he Married in Jan 1860, I am trying find where his parents where on the 1861 Census, his parents were John Robson born 1805 Corbridge and Eleanor Urwin born 1809 at Byker.
The family was living Sunderland on the 1851 Census as follows
20 Nesham sq
John Robson born born Corbridge 1805
Eleanor born Byker 1809
John born Sunderland 1840
Margaret born Sunderland 1841
Armstrong 1843 Hetton Le Hole
Thomas 1850 Sunderland

The family must have been in Sunderland in 1862 as John snr died at 75 Tweed St, to complicate matters I found out South Nicholson St had its named changed to Tweed St before the 1861 census, therefore I thought I would have found the family living in the newly named Tweed St but there not there?

Thanks
Allan Robson

, Armstrong is not on the 1861 census
Do you mean he has died before the census, he has emigrated or you can't find him?

I think durhamgirl is suggesting that as he is likely still to be at home with parents in 1861 [as aged 16/17] & he has a more unusual name, you may find parents by finding him. Have you tried wildcard searches rather than exact names?

ADDED: I see he died in 1916:
Name:   Armstrong U Robson
Death Age:   72
Birth Date:   abt 1844
Registration Date:   Dec 1916
Registration district:   Sunderland
Inferred County:   Durham
Volume:   10a
Page:   677
Seeking: RC baptism Philip Murray Feb ish 1814 ? nr Chatham Kent.
IRE: Kik DRAY[EA], PURCELL, WHITE: Mea LYNCH: Tip MURRAY, SHEEDY: Wem ALLEN, ENGLISHBY; Dub PENROSE: Lim DUNN[E], FRAWLEY, WILLIAMS.

Thanks for your reply, Armstrong's father died in 1862 after the 1861 Census, I have tried wildcard  no sign of the family.

For reference if any one else is looking
1851 census ref HO107; Piece: 2397; Folio: 119; Page: 29, John is an engine wright.

ADDED: 1871 for Eleanor & Armstrong RG10; Piece: 5007; Folio: 68; Page: 60; Armstrong is a mariner, which no doubt accounts for him being absent in 1861 - probably at sea. Will continue to look for John & Eleanor.
