1780s uniform

Could some kind person please tell me the name of the metal item around this soldiers neck, (my daughter keeps asking and i cant seem to find it anywhere).

Tonepad has provided you with the answer. In addition they were the sign of an officer in the British Army together with the crimson waist sash. The gorget was deleted about 1830.
Griffiths Llandogo, Mitcheltroy, Mon. and Whitchurch Here (Also Edwards),  18th C., Griffiths FoD 19th Century.
