Who was Jane Pembroke?
« on: Friday 29 September 17 18:37 BST (UK) »
Jane Pembroke married Isaac Berriman in West Challow on13 Nov 1809. She was otp, Isaac was from Lidiard Tregoze, Wilts. One of the witnesses was a Lydia Pembroke, the best candidate I have for Lydia is daughter of Thomas Pembroke and Jane Partridge b abt 1787 in Letcombe Bassett. This Lydia married Thomas Ireson in 1811, so would be alive and single in 1809. But she doesn't seem to have a sister or close relative called Jane Pembroke as far as I can see.
There is a baptism for a Isaac Berriman in Lidiard Tregoze on 23 Aug 1789 s/o Isaac and Grace and a burial for an Isaac in LT on 6 Mar 1814 age 24.
Can anyone please find Jane's baptism, I would guess she was similar age to Isaac and baptised in or near W Challow.
No luck yet finding her death or a census record, but likely she remarried if widowed young

Found a marriage in LT between Jane Berriman and John Hunt of Purton. No status mentioned, so don't know if she was a widow.
But in Purton in 1827 there is a baptism for a John Pembroke Hunt s/o John and Jane, so it might be the Jane I'm looking for.

I think that all fits as when John Pembroke Hunt marries in 1848 one of his witnesses was a William Berriman.

As you say, Thomas & Jane had no Jane [familysearch]
Thomas 1781
Elizabeth 1785
Liddy 1787
Richard 1790
Charles 1793
John 1794
so there is a gap between 1781 & 1785 where another child could have been born [and as first child named after father could have been named after mother]....though strange no baptism.

ADDED: Is this young James Hunt aged 15 labourer living alone in St Giles in 1841?

So may Jane have died thus not appearing on census?

Just been thinking of Jane's timeline and it might work out that she was Jenny

Jenny born 23 Sept 1793, bapt 9 Oct, baseborn daughter of Sarah. Possible for Sarah to be d/o Thomas Pembroke and Jane nee Partridge bapt 1771. Sarah married Edward Wiltshire (a minor) 6 years her junior on 7 Oct 1796, their first child bapt 5 Feb 1797, so quite pregnant when she married.

Jane married Isaac Berriman 13 Nov 1809, if same person she would 16, but from Isaac Berriman's age at death, he would be only 19 when married, so it is possible that this rather young couple married.

Jane widowed in 1814 - she would be 21

Jane remarried John Hunt of Purton in Lidiard Tregoze in 1822 - age would be 29

Several children baptised to John and Jane ( including John Pembroke Hunt) between 1826 and 1835 (she would be 42 in 1835).

1841 census has John, Jane and 6 children ( John, Elizabeth, Jesse, Charles, Hannah and Jabez). The first 5 I can find baptisms for but not the youngest (Jabez). However he was born in 1839 and GRO index confirms mmn Pembroke. However it does show Jane b Wiltshire, but I suspect John just assumed that when he filled in census form.
This would Jane 46 when Jabez born - quite possible

Jane Hunt Buried Purton 2 Mar 1851 age 57 - giving year of birth 1874, but if born Sept 1793, her age in March 1851 would be 57 as she hadn't yet had her 58th birthday.

Does that all sound feasible and Jane / Jenny are the same person? And Sarah d/o Thomas and Jane Pembroke is her mother?

I have Charles bapt 26 Jan 1783 that fills the gap, and earlier children Sarah Jul 1771, Ann Nov 1772, William Dec 1774, Fanny Dec 1776, Mary 1779.

Tazzie

I have found baptism for William Berriman in Lidiard Tregoze on 5 Oct 1817, mother Jane Berriman no father mentioned, so the widowed Jane seems to have had another relationship.
