Death certificate for Margaret Straton in the Northern Territory
« on: Saturday 30 September 17 07:20 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on how I might find more information about Margaret Straton (c1850 - 1880), buried in Darwin Gardens Cemetery Reserve. At one level she is easy to find out about her, for example here she is on findagrave:
https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgipage=gr&GRid=102779993&ref=acom

and ancestry.com has about 3 entries for her death - here is one of them:
Name:Margaret Straton
Birth Year:abt 1850
Age:30
Death Date:01 Aug 1880
Death Place:Palmerston, Northern Territory
Residence Place:Palmerston
Remarks:Wife Of Baker, Wife Of Edward Straton
Registration Place:Palmerston, Northern Territory
Page Number:19
Entry Number:123/85/1

I have found her marriage record in the NZ BDM:
1871/8718 Margaret Marshall Edward Straten

and most intriguingly an entry for her death in New Zealand
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/WEST18801008.2.6

This implies she is the sister of my relative John Marshall, who was mayor of Westport later on. The problem is, that it is easy to find out details of where John Marshall comes from - he is the son of John Marshall and Margaret McWatt according to his death certificate, but tracing this family in Glasgow gives no Margaret Marshall born in 1850.

My question is, are there sources in Darwin that are accessible that might tell me more about who Margaret Straton was, particularly her parents? The office that could supply a death certificate seem difficult to access from online. Maybe there are papers from the time that would say more?

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can give.

I should mention that there is scant information on a death certificate from SA in 1880.  Quite frankly I wouldn't waste my money.  Most of the info other than cause of death is on the index.  On an 1880 death cert -
Date of Death
Name
Sex
Age
Occupation
Usual Residence
Cause of Death
Place of Death
Informant

Her marriage cert in NZ may help you identify her further.

Have a search here yourself....http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/     I suggest using any alternative spellings for the surname.  Edward appears to have been a baker by trade.

Thanks for the newspaper and other resources - they will come in useful for a number of relatives.

I was hoping the death certificate might have more details, but it sounds as if it is not worth pursuing. I have just put in an order for the marriage certificate, but these are pretty variable with regards to information at that time too.  I am hoping the Westport one might have something however, as others I have obtained from that region have had details (but there doesn't seem to be a standardised format in New Zealand at that time).

Gerry - Mr Straton seems to have had his share of tragedy.  I had not even picked up on a son called August William existing! Oh I see he is another death at birth - very sad.

I am fairly certain that this Margaret Straton and John Marshall are related, as I have strong DNA matches with descendants of both (and the NZ death notice says they are), but it is obscure what the connection might be. John has a sister Jane born in 1849, so is it a possibility that she changed her name later on? The family does actually have a daughter Margaret in 1868, but she dies the same year she is born.
