John William Bramhall of Oldham
« on: Saturday 30 September 17 21:49 BST (UK) »
Hi, I was asked by a friend to see if I could find more info on his grandfather, Harry Duckworth. He emailed me the following info verbatim;

My mother was Elizabeth Duckworth nee Bramhall she married Harry Duckworth in 1945

Elizabeth Bramhall was born 23/11/1905 and died 12/04/1992

Elizabeth was the daughter of Margaret Morley born 31/7/1868 died 22/9/1926 and John William Bramhall born 6/12/1870 died 3/5/1944

I have traced my maternal grandmother’s side back to 1810 but have had no joy with my grandfather’s history except I have a copy of his birth certificate showing his birth on 6/12/1870 at Union Workhouse in Oldham. His mother is named as Hannah Bramhall and the father isn't shown.

I also have a short family history written by my mother and in it she states that his mother died when he was 2 and he was taken in by his mother’s sister, who was a nurse at Shire Hill Workhouse in Glossop.

The 1881 census of Shire Hill Workhouse (Glossop Workhouse) shows him as a student, Hannah is not shown but I have a copy of a death certificate for Hannah Bramhall, age 24 years, cotton card room hand who died in the Union Workhouse on 2 November 1872 (this would tie in with what my mum wrote regarding him being 2 when his mother died). I also have found on the web a photo taken in 1880 of the staff and inmates of the workhouse and funnily enough the lady dressed as a nurse bears a striking resemblance to me and my cousin.

I have a friend who lives in Glossop and she has found out that all records from the Union Workhouse were destroyed in a fire.

This is how far I have managed to get, I have just not been able to tie up any other people.

I have vague memories of a relative in Padfield Glossop called Carrie, not her full name and I remember it was a shortened version of a very strange name.

Can anyone help him out please?

Thanks, Luke

John William names his father as John deceased a labourer when he marries but that could be a made up name and if no father on the birth certificate there's really nowhere much to go  :-\
